Auto-segmenting spherical projectile
10323918 · 2019-06-18 · ·

Described are spherical projectiles such as used in birdshot, buckshot, or single ball spherical projectiles, including slugs, muzzle loading projectiles, or any close-to-bore diameter projectile, that is auto-segmenting or self-segmenting upon impact with a target. The projectile or shot disclosed herein retains its shape and structure during flight until impact with soft tissue, whereupon its individual sections separate or segment in a controllable manner, each portion of the projectile imparting or depositing a high amount energy to the tissue and target. The auto-segmenting spherical projectiles can be frangible or non-frangible. This disclosure also provides cartridges such as shotshells that are loaded with the projectiles described herein.

Frangible firearm projectiles, methods for forming the same, and firearm cartridges containing the same

Frangible firearm projectiles, firearm cartridges containing the same, and methods for forming the same. The firearm projectiles are formed from a compacted mixture of metal powders that includes zinc and iron powders and which may include an anti-sparking agent. The compacted mixture is heat treated for a time sufficient to form a plurality of discrete alloy domains within the compacted mixture. The frangible firearm projectile may be formed by a mechanism that includes vapor-phase diffusion bonding and oxidation of the metal powders and that does not include forming a liquid phase of any of the metal powders or utilizing a polymeric binder. A majority component of the frangible firearm projectile may be iron. One or more of zinc, bismuth, tin, copper, nickel, tungsten, boron, and/or alloys thereof may form a minority component of the frangible firearm projectile. The anti-sparking agent may include a borate, such as boric acid.

FRAGMENTING SHOTGUN PROJECTILE WITH RADIALLY-DISPOSED SEGMENTS
20180356193 · 2018-12-13 ·

A projectile comprising a central slug axially circumscribed by a segmented cylindrical sleeve having a plurality of fragmenting segments and a base that opens into an interior cavity. A flange may circumscribe the base. A wad may fill the interior cavity, remaining attached to the central slug. The wad travels with projectile to set a geometric center behind the center of gravity of the projectile. A radially-segmented cylindrical sleeve receives the central slug. The cylindrical sleeve comprises inwardly sloping segments for funneling target material into the recess between the slug and cylindrical sleeve. The segments bend outwardly upon impact and are adapted to bend, compress or flex inwardly to pass through a muzzle choke.

The invention relates to ammunition for firearms, as smooth and a rifled barrel. The projectile with rigid attached to the housing stabilizing fletching block, plates of fletching block have a continuation on the housing, centering the projectile in the barrel. In the offered variant, on the friction and heat of the bullet and the barrel takes about 1% of the shot energy, besides low vibration. The rest of energy escapes to destination, and that's good. Erasing minimal of the barrel. Application of the projectile in the shotgun and rifle barrels increases the service life of barrels. Use of such projectiles increases the initial speed, and with the sleeve-nozzle and a second charge, allows to increase the speed and specialization of the projectile. At the expense of the aerodynamic and gyroscopic effects, increases the lethal effect over long distances, due to the greater energy saved, improve the close grouping of shots and flat trajectory.
