Projectile with expanding medium

A projectile that extends in the longitudinal direction and can be introduced into a cartridge by means of a casing. Moreover, the projectile has a projectile body that contains both a penetrator and an expanding medium. Characterizing the present invention, it is proposed to use metal foam, in particular air-foamed aluminum, as the expanding medium.

FRANGIBLE FIREARM PROJECTILES, METHODS FOR FORMING THE SAME, AND FIREARM CARTRIDGES CONTAINING THE SAME

Frangible firearm projectiles, firearm cartridges containing the same, and methods for forming the same. The firearm projectiles are formed from compacted metal powders that may include an anti-sparking agent. The compacted metal powders may be or include a compacted mixture of metal powders that may include powders of one or more of iron, zinc, bismuth, copper, tungsten, nickel, boron, and/or alloys thereof, and/or oxides thereof. The compacted mixture may be heat treated for a time sufficient to form a plurality of discrete alloy domains within the compacted mixture. The frangible firearm projectile may be formed by a mechanism6 that includes vapor-phase diffusion bonding and oxidation of the metal powders and that does not include forming a liquid phase of any of the metal powders or utilizing a polymeric binder. The anti-sparking agent may include a borate, such as boric acid.

Hollow point bullet

An improved hollow point bullet has a core of a soft, dense metal having a generally cylindrical rear section, a tapering front section, and an open forward end opening to a cavity. A jacket of a harder metal than the core surrounds at least the rear and front sections of the core, and extends at least partially into the cavity. An expander of a rigid polymer is disposed in the cavity, substantially filling the cavity and providing at least one passage through to the bottom of the cavity.

The disclosure relates to a hybridized fragmenting projectile having slots with divergent surfaces that intersect at a joint having a curved proximal portion. The projectile fragments effectively upon impact with a target after being fired from a firearm at either subsonic or supersonic speed, regardless of environmental conditions or whether the firearm user adjusts the firearm to change between supersonic operation and subsonic operation.
