Gas turbine engine with efficient thrust generation
A highly efficient gas turbine engine includes the fan of the gas turbine engine driven from a turbine via a gearbox, such that the fan has a lower rotational speed than the driving turbine, thereby providing efficiency gains. The efficient fan system is mated to a core that has low cooling flow requirements and/or high temperature capability, and which may have particularly low mass for a given power.
Methods for fabricating protective coating systems for gas turbine engine applications
Methods for fabricating protective coating systems for gas turbine engine applications are provided. An exemplary method of applying a protective coating to a substrate includes the steps of providing a substrate formed of a ceramic matrix composite material, forming a first coating layer directly on to the substrate and comprising an oxygen barrier material, a compliance material, or a bonding material and forming a second coating layer directly on to the first coating layer and comprising a thermal barrier material. The method optionally includes forming a third coating layer partially directly on to the second coating layer and partially within at least some of the plurality of pores of the second coating layer.
CMC vane mate face flange
A vane arc segment includes a continuous airfoil piece that defines first and second platforms and an airfoil section that extends between the first and second platforms. The airfoil section has a pressure side and a suction side. The first platform defines axially-sloped suction and pressure side circumferential mate faces, first and second axial sides, a gaspath side, a non-gaspath side, and a flange that projects from the non-gaspath side. The flange extends along at least a portion the axially-sloped suction side circumferential mate face.
Airfoil assembly with fiber-reinforced composite rings and toothed exit slot
An airfoil assembly includes first and second fiber-reinforced composite airfoil rings that each have inner and outer platform sections, a suction side wall extending between the inner and outer platforms, a pressure side wall extending between the inner and outer platforms, and suction and pressure side mate faces along, respectively, edges of the suction and pressure side walls. The suction side mate face of the first fiber-reinforced composite airfoil ring and the pressure side mate face of the second fiber-reinforced composite airfoil ring mate at an interface to form an airfoil that circumscribes an internal cavity. A least one of the suction or pressure side mate faces includes protrusions along a trailing edge of the airfoil. The protrusions define a toothed exit slot for emitting cooling air from the internal cavity.
