Systems and methods for dynamic control of filtration efficiency and fuel economy
A filtration assembly for removing particulate matter from exhaust gas produced by an engine, including: a first filter; a second filter positioned downstream of the first filter; and a valve including: a first ring defining a plurality of first openings, and a second ring defining a plurality of second openings, the second ring abutting the first ring. The valve is moveable between a closed position in which the plurality of first openings are misaligned with the plurality of second openings to prevent a fluid from flowing through the plurality of first and second openings, and an open position in which the second ring is rotated relative to the first ring such that the plurality of first openings are aligned with the plurality of second openings allowing the fluid to flow therethrough. A first end of the valve is positioned at an outlet of the first filter, and a second end of the valve is positioned at an inlet of the second filter. In the closed position of the valve, substantially all of the exhaust gas flows through the second filter, and in the open position of the valve, at least a portion of the exhaust gas flows through the valve and bypasses the second filter.
LEAN NOx TRAP PLUS LOW TEMPERATURE NOx ADSORBER SYSTEM FOR LOW TEMPERATURE NOx TRAPPING
The present disclosure is directed to an emission treatment system for NO.sub.x abatement in an exhaust stream of a lean burn engine. The emission treatment system includes a lean NO.sub.x trap (LNT) in fluid communication with and downstream from the lean burn engine and a low-temperature NO.sub.x adsorber (LT-NA) in fluid communication with and downstream of the LNT. Further provided is a method for abating NO.sub.x in an exhaust stream from a lean burn engine utilizing the disclosed system.
Catalytically active particle filter with a high degree of filtration efficiency
The invention relates to a wall-flow filter as a particle filter with catalytically active coatings in the channels which are closed in a gas-tight manner at the opposing closed ends of the channels A at the first end, wherein the inlet region of the filter is additionally supplied with a dry powder-gas aerosol which contains metal compounds with a high melting point (such as the metal oxides Al2O3, SiO2, FeO2, TiO2, ZnO2, etc. for example) and which is to simultaneously improve the catalytic activity and the degree of filtration efficiency with respect to the exhaust gas back-pressure.
Catalytically active particulate filter
The present invention relates to a particulate filter which comprises a wall flow filter of length L and two different catalytically active coatings Y and Z, wherein the wall flow filter comprises channels E and A that extend in parallel between a first and a second end of the wall flow filter and are separated by porous walls which form the surfaces O.sub.E and O.sub.A, respectively, and wherein the channels E are closed at the second end and the channels A are closed at the first end. The invention is characterized in that the coating Y is located in the channels E on the surfaces O.sub.E and the coating Z is located in the channels A on the surfaces O.sub.A.
System and method for detecting defects in a honeycomb body
Defect detection systems include at least one nozzle for delivering a CO.sub.2 particulate fluid to an inlet end of a plugged honeycomb body. Defects in the honeycomb, if any, are determined by monitoring CO.sub.2 particulate flow at the outlet end of the honeycomb body. Methods for detecting defects in plugged honeycomb bodies are also disclosed.

High ash storage, pattern-plugged, honeycomb bodies and particulate filters
A honeycomb body having intersecting porous walls and repeating structural units. Each repeating structural unit has a plurality of inlet channels and outlet channels that extend parallel to each other in an axial direction from an inlet face to an outlet face. Each of the repeating structural units has 2.0<I/O<3.0, wherein I/O is a ratio of a number of inlet channels to a number of the outlet channels, each of the inlet and outlet channels have a same cross-sectional size and shape, and each inlet channel of a particular repeating structural unit directly abuts an outlet channel of the particular repeating structural unit or an outlet channel of an adjacent repeating structural unit. Particulate filters including the honeycomb body, honeycomb extrusion dies, and methods of capturing soot in the honeycomb body are provided, as are other aspects.
