A fluid flow control device controls flow of coolant in a motor vehicle motor cooling system. The flow control device includes first and second coolant inlets and first and second coolant outlets. The flow control device is operable selectively to direct coolant flowing into the device to flow out from the flow device through one or both of the first and second outlets in dependence on a temperature of fluid flowing through the device.

A valve device includes: a casing having an outflow port in which a fluid outlet opening is formed; a joint joined to an opening end surface of the outlet opening; a valve accommodated in the casing so as to be rotatable or slidable and in which a communication port that can communicate with the outlet opening is formed; and a sliding ring with a sliding surface for sliding on an outer surface of the valve while being accommodated in the outflow port and communicates the outlet and the communication port based upon a position of the valve. The invention provides a single radiator cooling system for use in hybrid electric vehicles, the system comprising a surface in thermal communication with electronics, and subcooled boiling fluid contacting the surface. The invention also provides a single radiator method for simultaneously cooling electronics and an internal combustion engine in a hybrid electric vehicle, the method comprising separating a coolant fluid into a first portion and a second portion; directing the first portion to the electronics and the second portion to the internal combustion engine for a time sufficient to maintain the temperature of the electronics at or below 175° C.; combining the first and second portion to reestablish the coolant fluid; and treating the reestablished coolant fluid to the single radiator for a time sufficient to decrease the temperature of the reestablished coolant fluid to the temperature it had before separation.

A cooling system for an internal combustion engine is provided. The cooling system comprises: a cooling passage provided within an engine housing of the engine, the cooling passage configured to carry a bulk flow of coolant to cool the engine housing, wherein the bulk flow of coolant within the cooling passage is driven by convection or a pump; and one or more additional cooling passages provided within the engine housing, each configured to introduce a flow of coolant into the cooling passage; one or more additional cooling passage pumps configured to pump coolant within the additional cooling passages; wherein the engine housing comprises one or more high temperature regions, which are at a higher temperature than one or more low temperature regions of the engine housing; and wherein the additional cooling passages are configured to direct the introduced coolant towards the one or more high temperature regions.

INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE

An internal combustion engine includes an intake air temperature adjustment apparatus that adjusts the temperature of intake air, and a control apparatus that operates at least the intake air temperature adjustment apparatus. When the internal combustion engine operates in a stoichiometric EGR mode, the control apparatus operates the intake air temperature adjustment apparatus so that the temperature of intake air entering a combustion chamber enters a first temperature region. When the internal combustion engine operates in a lean mode, the control apparatus operates the intake air temperature adjustment apparatus so that the temperature of intake air entering a combustion chamber enters a second temperature region that is a lower temperature region than the first temperature region.

INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE

The control apparatus operates an engine water temperature adjustment apparatus so that the temperature of cooling water that passes through an engine head enters a first temperature region in a lean mode, and operates the engine water temperature adjustment apparatus so that the temperature of the cooling water enters a second temperature region that is lower than the first temperature region in a stoichiometric mode. When knocking is detected after switching is started from the stoichiometric mode to the lean mode, the control apparatus performs any one of a first operation to operate a variable valve apparatus so as to retard the closing timing of an intake valve, a second operation to operate an oil jet apparatus so as to increase an oil jet amount, and a third operation to operate an EGR apparatus so as to increase an EGR amount.
