A piston for an internal combustion engine including a cooling gallery and a complex combustion surface is provided. The piston includes an upper crown member joined to a lower member, for example by hybrid induction welding. A complex combustion bowl is formed in the upper crown member by forging. The combustion bowl includes at least one protrusion, and typically a plurality of protrusions spaced from one another. After the forging step and before the joining step, portions of an undercrown surface located opposite the spaces between the protrusions are machined, and portions located directly opposite the protrusions are left as-forged. The crown member is joined to the lower member, for example by hybrid induction welding.

In a compression-ignition engine having a two-stage cavity, the distribution ratio between fuel for an upper cavity and fuel for a lower cavity is maintained even when the operational state of the engine changes. A piston of the engine includes a lower cavity, an upper cavity, and a lip portion therebetween. A controller causes a main injection and at least one pilot injection to be executed when the engine operates in a first state and a second state in which the load is lower than the load in the first state. The fuel spray is distributed to the lower cavity and the upper cavity. The controller sets the timing of the pilot injection(s) so that the distribution ratio of the fuel spray of the pilot injection(s) for the lower cavity is higher when the engine operates in the first state than when in the second state.

A direct-injected compression ignition internal combustion engine includes an engine housing having a cylinder and a piston movable within the cylinder and including a piston end face forming a combustion bowl. The piston end face has an annular piston rim with a rounded inner rim surface that extends radially inward and axially downward from a planar outer rim surface to a combustion bowl edge. An antebowl is defined by the rounded inner rim surface and has an antebowl volume that is about 0.8% or greater of a total volume of the combustion bowl and the antebowl together. A configuration and dimensional attributes of the antebowl is associated with reduced smoke production during operation, particularly for low to mid-load transients.
