The system includes a sensor system that measures a ground contour in front of the mowing head, and generates contour measurement signals; and a controller that determines whether to move the mowing head based on the contour measurement signals, and generates movement commands for the mowing head when it determines to move the mowing head. The mowing head can include tilt and lift cylinders, and the controller can determine whether to move the mowing head using the tilt or lift cylinders. The sensor system can include a pivot arm that moves in response to changes in the ground contour, and an angle sensor that measures an angle of the pivot arm. There can be one or more sensor systems positioned between the right and left sides of the mowing head.

A linear actuator can be located adjacent the frame members and connected to the pivot bar such that actuation of the linear actuator causes the pivot bar to rotate about a rotational axis of the pivot bar. At least one cam can be connected to the pivot bar so as to rotate with the pivot bar, the cam including a mower housing attachment element that supports the mower housing such that rotation of the cam varies a distance between the frame and the mower housing.

A harvesting system for harvesting stalky plants is mountable on a power unit such as an agricultural combine. The harvesting system may have both an upper harvesting head that cuts off the tops of the plants and the directs seed-bearing portions of the plant to the combine's thresher, and a lower harvesting head cuts the stalks near the ground and discharges the stalks in two or more windrows. In order to increase throughput, the upper harvesting head may be raisable and lowerable relative to the combine's feeder housing. To accommodate such adjustment, a discharge conveyor of the upper harvesting head may extend at an adjustable angle relative to the feeder housing. The lower harvesting head may have draper belts arranged to discharge the stalks in two or more, and more typically three or more, laterally spaced, parallel windrows.
