In an internal combustion engine, fuel injection is stopped to automatically stop the engine when automatic stop conditions are met. The engine is started in response to a request to restart the engine while an engine speed is decreasing due to an automatic stoppage by resuming fuel injection if the engine speed is equal to or greater than a combustion recoverable rotational speed threshold, and by using an electric motor if the engine speed is less than the combustion recoverable rotational speed threshold. When the engine speed of the internal combustion engine falls below the combustion recoverable rotational speed threshold while the engine speed is decreasing due to an automatic stoppage, an amount of air entering cylinders is reduced to be less than before the engine speed fell below the combustion recoverable rotational speed threshold.

The control unit is configured to align the camshaft such that the first valve clearance compensation device is pressure-loaded in the idle state of the crankshaft by a plateau area assigned to the first cam to hold the first gas exchange valve in the first open position.

Start controller for engine

Provided is a start controller for an engine capable of reducing torque of a starter consumed to start the engine. The start controller includes a stop position sensor that detects a position of a piston in each cylinder at an engine stop time, an intake pressure sensor that detects an intake pressure in an intake passage, and a processor that determines whether the position of the piston in each of the cylinders detected by the stop position sensor is within a specified target range after the engine is stopped. In the case where it is determined that the position of the piston in each of the cylinders after the engine stop is out of the target range and the intake pressure detected by the intake pressure sensor is lower than an atmospheric pressure, the engine is started by a motor even when an engine start condition is not satisfied.

The control unit is powered by a rechargeable twelve volt DC battery. The switch is selectively operable by the control unit to connect one of a first input or a second input to an output. The second input receives the supply of electrical power from an internal combustion engine. The inverter is positioned between the DC battery and the first input, and supplies electrical power to the electrical device when a movable contact of the switch connects the output to the first input. The power control circuit is connected to the control unit and is operable to adjust the movable contact of the switch to selectively connect the output to either the first input or the second input.
