Method and system for operating an engine

A method for operating an engine during a fuel cut-off mode is disclosed. The method may adjust exhaust valve opening timing and exhaust valve lift of one or more cylinders to heat air flowing through the one or more cylinders so that a temperature of an after treatment device may be maintained or increased.

System and method for detecting engine misfire

Systems and methods determining a presence or absence of engine misfire at low engine load are disclosed. In one example, the presence or absence of engine misfire is based on a fuel target error value and an exhaust temperature error. Operation of an engine may be adjusted when engine misfire is detected.

Some embodiments described herein relate to a method of operating a compression ignition engine. The method of operating the compression ignition engine includes opening an intake valve to draw a volume of air into a combustion chamber, closing an intake valve, and moving a piston from a bottom-dead-center (BDC) position to a top-dead-center (TDC) position in the combustion chamber at a compression ratio of at least about 15:1. The method further includes injecting a volume of fuel into the combustion chamber at an engine crank angle between about 330 degrees and about 365 degrees during a first time period. The fuel has a cetane number less than about 40. The method further includes combusting substantially all of the volume of fuel. In some embodiments, a delay between injecting the volume of fuel into the combustion chamber and initiation of combustion is less than about 2 ms.

SURGICAL STAPLING INSTRUMENT HAVING A RELEASABLE BUTTRESS MATERIAL

A surgical stapler including an anvil, a staple cartridge, and a buttress material removably retained to the anvil and/or staple cartridge. In various embodiments, the staple cartridge can include at least one staple removably stored therein which can, when deployed, or fired, therefrom, contact the buttress material and remove the buttress material from the anvil and/or staple cartridge. In at least one embodiment, the anvil can include at least one lip and/or groove configured to removably retain the buttress material to the anvil until deformable members extending from the surgical staple are bent by the anvil and are directed toward and contact the buttress material.

CONTROL APPARATUS FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE

A control apparatus for an internal combustion engine is configured, during a slightly stratified-charge lean-burn operation, to: calculate a basic total fuel injection amount based on a required torque; calculate a compression stroke injection amount based on an ignition delay index value; calculate, as a basic main injection amount, a value obtained by subtracting a compression stroke injection amount from the basic total fuel injection amount; calculate, based on an output value of an in-cylinder pressure sensor, an actual specified combustion index value that represents a main combustion speed or a combustion fluctuation rate; calculate a main injection correction term based on a result of a comparison between a target specified combustion index value or a tolerable specified combustion index value, and the actual specified combustion index value; and calculate a main injection amount by adding the main injection correction term to the basic main injection amount.

INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE

An internal combustion engine includes a twin entry type turbocharger with which a first exhaust passage and a second exhaust passage respectively communicate individually, a communication path that causes the first exhaust passage and the second exhaust passage to communicate with each other, a communication valve that opens and closes the communication path, an abnormality diagnosis device that diagnoses presence or absence of abnormality of the communication valve, a variable valve timing mechanism capable of changing a period of valve overlap of the engine, and a control device. When it is determined that abnormality of a valve closure failure of the communication valve is present, the control device operates the mechanism to reduce the valve overlap in an operating state in which the communication valve is closed, more than in a case where it is determined that abnormality of a valve closure failure of the communication valve is absent.

Electromagnetic valve drive device

An electromagnetic valve drive device which supplies a hold current with a prescribed fluctuation range to an electromagnetic coil of an electromagnetic valve after a current peak when a supply of electricity starts has passed includes: a power supplier which intermittently applies a drive voltage to the electromagnetic coil; a detector which detects the hold current; a first comparator which compares a detected current by the detector with a first threshold value; a filter which performs integration processing on an output of the first comparator; a second comparator which compares an output of the filter with a second threshold value to generate an output signal used for generating a control signal for controlling the power supplier; and a control signal generator which generates the control signal for controlling the power supplier based on the output signal of the second comparator, wherein the filter is a count-up/down type digital filter.

Mixed fuel system

The present invention provides a novel combination of devices to measure and transmit to an electronic controller data pertaining to differential pressures, temperatures, regeneration status, exhaust content, accumulated gas consumption and substitute fuel consumption. The electronic controller compares the data to thresholds; when the controller receives signals indicating these thresholds or limits are met, the controller causes the gas substitution rate to be diminished or set to zero until after-treatments elements are fully regenerated thereby facilitating integration of a mixed fuel system with an application internal combustion engine.

Main fuel injected from the fuel injector into the combustion chamber is made to auto-ignite. During the compression stroke after injection of the main fuel and before the auto-ignition of the main fuel, first auxiliary fuel and second auxiliary fuel are successively injected from the fuel injector. By controlling the injection timing of the first auxiliary fuel, the ignition timing of the spark plug, and the injection timing of the second auxiliary fuel, the first auxiliary fuel is made to burn by flame propagation combustion by the ignition action of the spark plug, the second auxiliary fuel is made to be injected inside the flame propagation combustion region, and the second auxiliary fuel is made to burn by diffusive combustion before auto-ignition of the main fuel occurs.

A control system for an internal combustion engine is provided with a combustion control part, an operating state judging part judging if an engine operating state is a steady state or a combustion noise is a noise transition state where the combustion noise increases over a predetermined allowable noise value when burning fuel by an ignition-assist self-ignition combustion, and an ozone supply control part controlling the amount of ozone supplied to the combustion chamber by the ozone supply system. The ozone supply control part controls the amount of supply of ozone to a predetermined reference amount when the state is judged to be the steady state and controls the amount of supply of ozone to an amount of supply smaller than the reference amount or makes the amount of supply of ozone zero when the state is judged to be the noise transition state.
