An engine assembly is provided herein. The engine assembly includes a head gasket interposing a cylinder block and a cylinder head, the head gasket comprising a first layer in face sharing contact with a portion of a cylinder head attachment surface included in the cylinder block and having a first-layer coolant opening adjacent to two neighboring cylinders and a second layer having a second-layer coolant opening having a smaller cross-sectional area than the first-layer coolant opening.

EXOTHERMIC BONDING FOR CYLINDER BLOCK INSERTS

A method for manufacturing an engine block is disclosed. In embodiments, the method includes forming an expansion hole in a block body of the engine block that encircles an engine block bore at a head face of the engine block. The method also includes placing an insert into the expansion hole, the insert including an insert body. The method further includes placing a reaction material between the insert and the block body. The method yet further includes forming an insert bond layer between the insert and block body using the reaction material. The method still further includes forming an insert bore through the insert body.

Engine assembly including a thermal barrier

An engine assembly includes a cylinder block having at least one cylinder. The engine assembly includes at least one cylinder head coupled to the cylinder block, and at least one intake port coupled to the cylinder head, at least one exhaust port coupled to the cylinder head, and at least one fuel injector coupled to the cylinder head. The engine assembly includes a head cooling extension protruding from the cylinder head. The head cooling extension includes at least one extension wall and defines an extension cooling passageway at least partially enclosed by the at least one extension wall. The extension cooling passageway is at least partly disposed between the exhaust port and the fuel injector in order to create a thermal barrier between the fuel injector and the exhaust port when the coolant flows through the extension cooling passageway.

Engine assembly including cylinder head cooling

An engine assembly includes an engine block, a cylinder head coupled to the engine block with a cooling system running through both. The engine block defines a first cylinder bore and a first cylinder cooling jacket at an outer periphery of the first cylinder bore. The cylinder head defines a first port cooling jacket for a first set of ports in communication with the first cylinder bore. The coolant supply is in communication with the first cylinder cooling jacket and the first port cooling jacket. The first port cooling jacket defines a first head coolant flow path in a parallel flow arrangement with a coolant flow path defined by the first cylinder cooling jacket.
