Split volute for submersible pump

A split volute for a centrifugal pump is disclosed that provides a manufacturing advantage by improving the yield of high-chrome iron casting, providing for full surface coating capability using line-of-sight spray coating systems. Performance improvements include improved pump efficiency, abrasion resistance, and volute lifetime. Additional operational cost savings are enabled through reduced time required for common volute maintenance procedures and an increased replacement interval for the volute. Taken together, these advantages reduce the total cost of ownership of the split volute pump system.

Disclosed is an impeller for mixing a fluid wherein the impeller is fashioned so as to substantially reduce areas of fluid acceleration and deceleration around a hub region of the impeller during fluid mixing. Additionally, a bioreactor system having microcarriers, kit of parts and cell culturing method are also provided. The impeller has a generally circularly shaped hub having a downwardly directed progressively tapered volume which has plurality of periods formed therein corresponding to the number of increasingly arced blades. Each of the increasingly arced blades flare outwards to a distal end region of the impeller and have an increasing radius to said arc towards a peripheral edge region of said hub. The flare to the increasingly arced blades defines a larger circumference than that of said hub, thereby imparting a generally frusto-conical shape to the impeller. A method mixing a fluid using the impeller disclosed herein is also disclosed.

The outer rotor is driven and the projections mesh to create variable volume chambers. The outer rotor may be driven in both directions. In each direction, the driving part (first inward projection) of the outer rotor contacts a sealing surface on one side of an outward projection of the inner rotor, while a gap is left between a sealing surface of the other side of the outward projection and a second inward projection. The gap may have uniform width along its length in the radial direction, while in a direction parallel to the rotor axis it may be discontinuous or have variable size to create flow paths for gases.
