Turbochargers typically have separate hydrodynamic journal and thrust bearings. A turbocharger thrust bearing for a turbocharger is provided that merges the function of a journal bearing into a thrust bearing while maintaining the thrust bearing function to produce a turbocharger with a reduced axial space envelope. Such a thrust bearing includes a bore contoured to have a plurality of taper-land pairs distributed circumferentially about the bore. As a result, the axial length of the turbocharger bearing housing and shaft can be reduced.

A dynamic pressure bearing apparatus includes a bearing portion, a shaft, a radial dynamic pressure bearing portion, and a seal gap. An annular member arranged in an annular shape, fixed to the shaft axially between the seal portion and the attachment surface, and arranged to extend radially outward beyond an opening of the seal gap. A minute horizontal gap extending radially is defined between an upper surface of the bearing portion and a lower surface of the annular member. The seal gap is arranged to be in communication with an exterior space through the horizontal gap.

An electric motor-driven compressor includes a housing assembly comprising a motor housing and a compressor housing mounted thereto. The compressor housing contains a centrifugal compressor wheel that is mounted on a shaft of the motor rotor and also defines an air inlet that leads air into the compressor wheel, and a volute that collects the compressed air. Air bearings rotatably support the shaft. Cooling air passages are defined in the housing assembly for supplying cooling air to the air bearings. A diffuser between the exit of the compressor wheel and the volute serves to diffuse the compressed air. The compressor includes a heat shield formed separately from the compressor housing and the motor housing and disposed between them. The heat shield defines one wall of the diffuser and also cooperates with the housing assembly to define part of the cooling air passages for the cooling air supplied to the bearings.

Turbocharger compressor oil deflector and method

A turbocharger includes a two-piece thrust collar that includes inner and outer portions disposed around a rotatable shaft. The inner portion is engaged with a bushing disposed in and connected to the center housing by a retainer. The outer portion is disposed adjacent the inner portion along the rotatable shaft and connected to the rotatable shaft such that it rotates therewith. The outer portion forms an annular channel that extends in a radial direction relative to the rotatable shaft and peripherally around the shaft. An oil deflector is connected to the compressor back-plate and includes a base flange and a raised portion disposed at least partially over the annular channel.
