An aerodynamic device is described for mounting to an outer surface of a wind turbine blade. The aerodynamic device includes a baseplate having an inner surface defining a mounting region and a sealing region at least partially surrounds the mounting region. The mounting region is bonded to the outer surface of the blade by an adhesive. A seal is provided between the sealing region of the baseplate and the outer surface of the blade. The seal at least partially surrounds the mounting region. A barrier is provided between the seal and the adhesive. The barrier is arranged substantially to prevent contact between the seal and the adhesive.

Modular active structural vibration suppression for wind turbine blades

Systems, methods, and kits for reducing structural vibrations on wind turbine blades are provided. The actual dynamic structural conditions of a wind turbine blade can be used as a feedback mechanism. A flow control device and a sensor can be installed on a wind turbine blade, and a closed loop control system in operable communication with the flow control device and the sensor can be used to provide closed loop control.

Counter-rotating vertical axis wind turbine with deflector and vortex generators

A high efficiency vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) comprising two counter-rotating rotors, each comprising a plurality of straight rotor blades. One rotor is placed on a first vertical axis and another rotor is placed on a second vertical axis. The first vertical axis and the second vertical axis are positioned on a support structure extending there between. The support structure, and the first vertical axis of rotation and second vertical axis of rotation, can rotate about an intermediate axis of rotation, which is placed at a midpoint between the first vertical axis of rotation and second vertical axis of rotation. An angled deflector is mounted to the frame at or about the intermediate axis of rotation. During operation, the vertex of the deflector is positioned toward oncoming wind. The deflector comprises two symmetrical deflecting surfaces that extend from the vertex to the rotors. One or more vortex generators are positioned on each deflecting surface.

A rotor blade of a wind turbine including at least one vortex generator is provided. The vortex generator is attached to the surface of the rotor blade and is located at least partially within the boundary layer of the airflow flowing across the rotor blade. The vortex generator is exposed to a stagnation pressure, which is caused by the fraction of the airflow passing over the vortex generator and of which the magnitude depends on the velocity of the fraction of the airflow passing over the vortex generator. The vortex generator is arranged and prepared to change its configuration depending on the magnitude of the stagnation pressure acting on the vortex generator. Furthermore, an aspect relates to a wind turbine for generating electricity with at least one such rotor blade.

Wind turbine rotor blade assembly with surface features

Rotor blade assemblies for wind turbines are provided. A rotor blade assembly includes a rotor blade. In some embodiments, the rotor blade assembly further includes a surface feature configured on an exterior surface of the rotor blade, the surface feature having an exterior mounting surface. At least a portion of the exterior mounting surface has a contour in an uninstalled state that is different from a curvature of the exterior surface of the rotor blade at a mount location of the surface feature on the rotor blade. In other embodiments, the rotor blade assembly further includes a seal member surrounding at least a portion of a perimeter of the surface feature. The seal member contacts and provides a transition between the exterior surface and the surface feature.
