Each blade further comprises a rotor element at the tip comprising a permanent magnet having a first pole (401) and a second pole (402), the first pole being located adjacent the suction side of the blade and the second pole being located adjacent the pressure side such that a magnetic flux path extends perpendicularly through the blade tip.

The turbine includes a first turbine section and a second turbine section. A first shaft connects the first compressor section and the first turbine section. A second shaft connects the second compressor section and the second turbine section. A fan is connected to the first shaft via a geared architecture. The first shaft includes at least one magnetic section. An electromagnet is disposed radially outward of the first shaft at an axial location of the at least one magnetic section, relative to an axis defined by the gas turbine engine.

Gas turbine engines and methods of starting gas turbine engines, the gas turbine engine including: an electronic engine controller; one or more spools designated a starting spool for starting the engine, and has a required starting torque τs; a permanent magnet alternator mechanically coupled with the starting spool, the alternator, in a motor mode, provides a peak torque of τa, and, in a generator mode, generates electrical power for the electronic engine controller; and an electrical starter-generator mechanically coupled with the starting spool. The starter-generator in a motor mode, provides a peak torque of τsg, and, in a generator mode, generates electrical power for an external load. τsg+τa≥τs and τsg, τa<τs, and the electronic engine controller, during a start procedure, operates both the permanent magnet alternator and the starter-generator in a motor mode to drive the starting spool.

The engine starting system comprising: a gas turbine engine including rotational components comprising an engine compressor, an engine turbine, and a rotor shaft operably connecting the engine turbine to the engine compressor, wherein each rotational component is configured to rotate when any one of the rotational components is rotated; a permanent magnet alternator operably connected to at least one of the rotational components, the permanent magnet alternator being configured to rotate the rotational components; and a motor controller in electronic communication with the permanent magnet alternator, the motor controller being configured to command the permanent magnet alternator to rotate the rotational components at a selected angular velocity for a selected period of time.

The electric drive unit has a rotor and a stator. The rotor is equipped with a rotor body embodied around a rotation axis of the rotor. A receptacle for at least one permanent magnet is embodied on the rotor body. A permanent magnet is disposed in the receptacle of the rotor body. The rotor body is mountable using a threaded bushing on a turbocharger shaft of the exhaust-gas turbocharger. The rotor body has a further receptacle which extends in the direction of the rotation axis and in which the threaded bushing is disposed inside the rotor body. The further receptacle is disposed in the rotor body with an offset in the direction of the rotation axis relative to the receptacle.

An electric machine and a turning gear system for aircraft gas turbine engines are provided. The system has an electric machine designed for dual mode operation and a controller. The stator winding arrangement in the electric machine enables operation in either generating mode, during normal flight or motoring mode, during active engine turning. The controller is configured to reconfiguration connections of the windings external to the electric machine.

Embedded electric machine

A gas turbine engine includes a compressor section and a turbine section together defining a core air flowpath. Additionally, a rotary component is rotatable with at least a portion of the compressor section and at least a portion of the turbine section. An electric machine is mounted coaxially with the rotary component and positioned at least partially inward of the core air flowpath along a radial direction of the gas turbine engine. A cavity wall defines at least in part a buffer cavity surrounding at least a portion of the electric machine to thermally insulate the electric machine, e.g., from the relatively high temperatures within the core air flowpath.
