A turbine operable to produce a flow of exhaust gas along a central axis includes a strut having a flow portion positioned within the flow of exhaust gas and a strut cover having a length and positioned to surround the flow portion of the strut, the strut cover including a leading-edge portion, a mid-chord portion, and a trailing-edge portion. The mid-chord portion has a uniform cross-section, and the trailing-edge portion has a trailing-edge center positioned such that the mid-chord portion and the trailing-edge portion define a master chord plane. The leading-edge portion defines a leading-edge nose, and the leading-edge portion is twisted with respect to the master chord plane and the leading-edge nose along the length defines a curve that is not coincident with the master chord plane.
SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR TURBOMACHINE WITH LOCAL VORTEX GENERATOR ARRAY
A turbomachine includes a shroud and a hub spaced apart from the shroud to channel an airflow along a direction. The turbomachine includes a plurality of airfoils coupled between the shroud and the hub. At least one airfoil of the plurality of airfoils includes a leading edge spaced apart from a trailing edge in the direction of the airflow and a pressure side opposite a suction side. The turbomachine includes at least one local vortex generator array defined on the suction side so as to extend onto the hub or the shroud. The at least one local vortex generator array is defined downstream of the leading edge.

Methods for creating an aircraft turbomachine vane using additive manufacturing include additively manufacturing a vane on a bed of powder using selective laser melting, the additive manufacturing being performed on a support plate so that first or second circumferential edges are manufactured first directly on the support plate, at least one temporary support member being produced simultaneously with the first or second edges. The methods also include removing the temporary support member by breaking its connection with the leading or trailing edge with a tool that is engaged in at least one recess thereof.

A variable guide vane assembly has: variable guide vanes having airfoils extending from inner ends to outer ends, the variable guide vanes pivotable about respective spanwise axes between one or more open positions and a closed position, in the closed position, trailing edge regions of the airfoils sealingly engage leading edge regions of adjacent ones of the airfoils to block an air flow; an outer wall extending around the central axis, the outer ends of the variable guide vanes pivotably engaged to the outer wall; and an inner wall extending around the central axis, the inner ends of the variable guide vanes pivotably engaged to the inner wall, the inner wall defining inner faces distributed about the central axis, a shape of the inner faces complementary to a shape of the inner ends of the airfoils to form a seal when the variable guide vanes are in the closed position.
System and method for air injection passageway integration and optimization in turbomachinery
Systems and methods for air injection passageway integration and optimization in turbomachinery using surface vortex generation. An airfoil including a leading edge, a trailing edge, a pressure side, and a suction side, and is configured to influence an airflow as it passes from the leading edge to the trailing edge. The airfoil defines an aerodynamic passageway having an inlet on the pressure side and an outlet on the suction side to deliver air from the airflow through the airfoil to the suction side. The outlets are configured to inject the air at areas on either airfoil side targeted due to their propensity to generate undesirable boundary layer growth and associated flow losses. Outlet may also be included in the hub and the shroud of the turbomachine.

A gas turbine nozzle assembly of a gas turbine is provided. The turbine nozzle assembly may include a turbine nozzle extending from an inner diameter to an outer diameter and having an airfoil-shaped cross section having a leading edge and a trailing edge, and a pressure side and a suction side each of which extends from the leading edge to the trailing edge, wherein the turbine nozzle may include a hollow airfoil including a plurality of cavities positioned in the airfoil, an insert positioned in one or more of the plurality of cavities of the hollow airfoil, a plurality of cover plates, at least one of which is positioned at one of the inner diameter and at the outer diameter, and a plurality of impingement pans, at least one of which is positioned at one of the inner diameter and at the outer diameter.
HIGH TEMPERATURE CAPABLE ADDITIVELY MANUFACTURED TURBINE COMPONENT DESIGN
A hybrid three-layer system is presented. The hybrid three-layer system includes a two-layer composite system and an additively manufactured third layer comprising a lattice structure. The composite layer system includes a metallic substrate, a structured surface, and a thermal protection system. The structured surface may be additively manufactured onto the metallic substrate and includes structured surface features formed to project above the metallic substrate. Each of the structured surface features are separated from adjacent structured surface features by grooves. The thermal protection coating may be thermally sprayed onto the structured surface and is bonded to each of the structured surface features. The lattice structure is in contact with a surface of the metallic substrate of the composite layer system.

A fluid machine for an aircraft engine has: first and second walls; a gaspath defined between the first wall and the second wall; a rotor having blades rotatable about the central axis; and a stator having: a row of vanes having airfoils including leading edges, trailing edges, pressure sides and suction sides opposed the pressure sides, and depressions defined in the first wall, the depressions extending from a baseline surface of the first wall away from the second wall, a depression of the depressions located circumferentially between a pressure side of the pressure sides and a suction side of the suction sides, the depression axially overlapping the airfoils and located closer to the suction side than to the pressure side, an upstream end of the depression located closer to a leading edge of the leading edges than to a trailing edge of the trailing edges.
