A system (166) for transferring mechanical power in a turbine engine (150/151) including a low pressure spool (162) and a high pressure spool (156) includes a power transfer unit (168) coupled between an output shaft (172) of the low pressure spool (162) and a drive shaft (174) of the high pressure spool (156) to mechanically link the low pressure spool (162) to the high pressure spool (156), and a clutch (170) coupled to the power transfer unit (168), wherein the clutch (170) is configured to transfer power produced from the low pressure spool (162) to the high pressure spool (156).
Methods and systems for operating an engine to generate additional thrust
Methods and systems for operating an engine, the engine having an engine core, an exhaust nozzle, and variable geometry mechanisms, are provided. A request for an increase in thrust generated by the engine is received. In response to receipt of the request, it is determined that at least one operating condition for engine degradation thrust is met. In response to this determination, the variable geometry mechanisms are modulated to degrade an efficiency of the engine, thereby increasing a temperature of core air flowing through the engine core. The increase in thrust is generated from the increased temperature of the core air flowing through the engine core and into the exhaust nozzle.
ENGINE SYSTEM AND METHOD OF OPERATING THE SAME
A system has first and second fuel stores for first and second fuels, an engine, a fuel distribution system, first and second flow rates of the fuel contributing to a total flow rate of fuel; and a controller for controlling the relative fractions of the total flow rate of fuel to the engine according to the required power output of the engine such that the relative fraction of the total flow rate of fuel to the engine represented by the second flow rate increases with increasing required power output of the engine. The fuels are selected such that using only the second fuel results in a lower engine temperature than using only the first fuel, for the same mechanical power and/or the second fuel has a lower specific energy than the first and/or the second fuel produces more water during combustion than the first fuel per unit of fuel energy.

A system comprises first and second first fuel stores, an engine arranged to produce mechanical power, a fuel distribution system arranged to deliver fuel from the first and second fuel stores to the engine, the first fuel delivered at a first mass flow rate, the second fuel delivered at a second mass flow rate, the first and second mass flow rates contributing to a total mass flow rate of fuel to the engine, and a control system arranged to increase the relative fraction of the total mass flow rate of fuel represented by the second mass flow rate during a period of acceleration of the engine, in order to control a surge margin of the engine. The second fuel is selected to have a higher specific energy than the first fuel and to release a greater mass of water per unit mass of fuel than the first fuel.

Methods for monitoring engine health of an aircraft having a first engine and a second engine are provided. In one example, the method includes obtaining a first turbine gas temperature of the first engine and a second engine turbine gas temperature of the second engine from a first flight. The first turbine gas temperature and the second turbine gas temperature are related to each other to define a first value. The first value is compared to a data set for monitoring the engine health.
SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR PROVIDING IN-FLIGHT REVERSE THRUST FOR AN AIRCRAFT
A method and a system for providing in-flight reverse thrust for an aircraft are provided. The aircraft comprises an engine having a rotor, a compressor mechanically coupled to the rotor, and a variable geometry mechanism provided upstream of the compressor and configured to modulate an amount of compression work performed by the compressor. The method comprises operating the rotor with the variable geometry mechanism in a first position, receiving a request to increase reverse thrust for the rotor, in response to the request, adjusting the variable geometry mechanism from the first position towards a second position, the variable geometry mechanism having a greater opening angle in the second position than in the first position, and operating the rotor with the variable geometry mechanism in the second position for causing an increase in the amount of compression work performed by the compressor and an increase in reverse thrust for the rotor.
