Engines and pumps with motionless one-way valve
Embodiments of apparatus for controlling the movement of matter, including but not limited to one-way fluid valves, are disclosed. The apparatus may include a transition nozzle, a funnel nozzle, and a reverse flow blocker arranged in series in a case. A counter-flow area may be disposed about the funnel nozzle. The apparatus may permit matter to flow in a first direction, and discourage or prevent flow in a direction reverse to the first direction. Control over the flow of matter also may enable matter to be harvested, sorted, separated or combined with injected matter.

Microfluidic device
A microfluidic device includes a block having at least one reservoir, a base layer attached to the bottom of the block and a microfluidic channel formed in the base layer or at the interface between the block and base layer. The microfluidic channel is in fluid communication with the at least one reservoir. A static pressure source is operatively coupleable to the reservoir. A flow path extends from the reservoir to the microfluidic channel. The flow path has a first portion which extends upwardly away from the base layer over a barrier and into a second portion which extends downwardly towards the base layer and leads to the microfluidic channel. The flow path is configured such that it prevents flow from the reservoir to the microfluidic channel under the influence of gravity alone when the reservoir is filled to a level below the level of the top of the barrier.
VALVE, IN PARTICULAR FOR A DEVICE FOR ADMINISTERING A LIQUID MEDICAMENT, AND A CORRESPONDING DEVICE FOR ADMINISTERING A LIQUID MEDICAMENT
The invention relates to a valve, in particular for a device for administering a liquid medicament, with a valve body (1) which has an interior (2) for receiving a liquid (20), wherein the valve body (1) has a liquid inlet (3) and an opposite liquid outlet (4) which both open into the interior (2), wherein the interior (2) accommodates a large number of micro channels (5) which extend in connection direction (x) between the liquid inlet (3) and the liquid outlet (4). A corresponding device for administering a liquid medicament is also described.
Fluid check valve and fluidic systems for gas venting
A fluid check-valve for venting gas from a fluidic system comprises a retention body defining a fluid aperture having an upstream side and a downstream side, a hydrophilic porous material held by the retention body and disposed to cover the fluid aperture, and a hydrophobic porous material held by the retention body and disposed to cover the fluid aperture and adjacent the hydrophilic porous material. One face of the hydrophilic porous material is in fluid communication with the upstream side of the aperture, and one face of the hydrophobic porous material is in fluid communication with the downstream side of the aperture. The hydrophilic porous material is configured to retain liquid from the upstream side to hinder passage of gas from the downstream side to the upstream side, and the hydrophobic porous material is configured to hinder passage of liquid from the upstream side to the downstream side.
Method of constructing a nuclear reactor having reactor core and control elements supported by reactor vessel head
A nuclear reactor is designed to couple the load path of control elements with the reactor core, thus reducing opportunity for differential movement between the control elements and the reactor core. A core barrel can be fabricated in a manufacturing facility to include the reactor core, control element supports, and control element drive system. The core barrel can be mounted to a reactor vessel head. Movement, such as through seismic forces, transmits an equal direction and magnitude to the control elements and the reactor core, thus inhibiting the opportunity for differential movement.
PIPING ENHANCEMENT FOR BACKFLOW PREVENTION IN A MULTIPLE LOOP, METAL COOLED NUCLEAR REACTOR SYSTEM
A sodium-cooled nuclear reactor includes at least one electromagnetic pump assembly and a backflow reduction pipe. The backflow reduction pipe may include an inlet, an outlet, at least one tubular section having a first length and a first diameter, and at least one fluid diode section between the inlet and the outlet.

Electrorheological valve
An ER fluid valve includes a housing and a plurality of parallel flow passages through the housing each defined by spaced electrodes at least one of which is controllable independently of other flow passages electrodes. A controller is configured to selectively establish electrical fields for all of the independently controllable electrodes to close all of the flow passages to ER fluid flowing through the housing. By removing the fields from all of the independently controllable electrodes, all the flow passages are open to the ER fluid flowing through the housing. By establishing fields for select independently controllable electrodes to close their associated flow passages and by leaving other flow passages open, restricted flow of the ER fluid through the housing is accomplished to vary the flow rate through the housing.
