A drive circuit is configured to drive a light emitting unit which is provided in a vehicle lamp and includes a plurality of semiconductor light emitting elements connected in series. The drive circuit includes a drive voltage generation unit configured to reduce an input voltage from a battery to generate a drive voltage for driving the semiconductor light emitting elements, and a control unit configured to perform ON/OFF control for a bypass switch connected in parallel to a part of the semiconductor light emitting elements and to perform interlock dimming control when the input voltage becomes a first threshold value or lower. The interlock dimming control selects a dimming mode and increases an ON ratio per unit time of the bypass switch as the input voltage drops in the dimming mode.

Lighting device for producing a supplemental beam

A vehicle lighting system that projects a primary beam and that comprises a supplemental or auxiliary beam that augments the primary beam that does not exceed any regulatory maximum intensity values. In one embodiment, the lighting system utilizes a multi-lobed lens adapted to distribute light to predetermined areas of the primary beam. A combined beam is created having no portion that exceeds the regulatory maximum intensity. In one illustrative embodiment, the primary beam is a high beam and the combined beam is an augmented primary beam that does not exceed the high beam regulatory limit of 75,000 candelas.

The present invention relates to a method for operating a high-resolution projection headlight for a motor vehicle. The high-resolution projection headlight has an active LED pixel matrix light source which comprises an LED matrix monolithically integrated into a semiconductor chip with a plurality of light diode-based pixels and a driver circuit for separately controlling each individual pixel within the LED matrix. A current digital image of a sequence of images is continuously rasterized by means of a graphical controller from graphical data with at least one graphical object (50) and is provided for image reproduction with the projection headlight. A value for a thermal loading of the LED pixel matrix light source is continuously determined. During the rasterizing of a current digital image, surface areas (52) of the graphical objects (50) to be projected are at least partially masked with a masking (60, 61) and modulated, provided that the value for thermal loading exceeds a limit value. The invention also relates to a corresponding projection headlight system for a motor vehicle.

Lights with microlens arrays

A system may have lights produce illumination. A light may be provided with a collimated light source that produces collimated light. The collimated light source may use lenses or reflective optical elements to produce the collimated light. The light may have an array of light elements each of which emits a respective beam of the illumination. Each light element may have a preshaping lens that receives the collimated light and produces corresponding preshaped output light and an output lens that receives the output light from the preshaping lens and produces a corresponding beam of the illumination. An electrically adjustable shutter may be located between each preshaping lens and output lens to adjust the illumination between a low-beam pattern and high-beam pattern.
