A dual-use electromagnetic beam system may be used as a remote power delivery system when not needed as an offensive weapon. For example, a system for disabling or destroying uncooperative or enemy assets such as UAVs or ground vehicles may be used during “down time” to provide power to assets that are separated from prime power sources by distance or by logistics.

SAFETY ASSEMBLY

A safety assembly for use with a laser-directed energy weapon is disclosed. The assembly comprises a control system comprising a photodetector and a processing unit; and an optical device configured to attach to a target such that, when attached, the optical device provides a light beam to the photodetector. The processing unit is arranged to compare the received light beam against one or more predetermined attributes, and to permit the laser-directed energy weapon to fire only when the received light beam is determined to have the one or more attributes.

PROJECTILE DELIVERY OF DISRUPTIVE MEDIA FOR TARGET PROTECTION FROM DIRECTED ENERGY

Methods, devices, and systems may protect a target from undesirable electromagnetic radiation by detecting electromagnetic radiation (including coherent radiation such as laser beams) aimed at a target from a source; calculating a first release position to disrupt the electromagnetic radiation thereby protecting the target; launching a projectile that may include a disruptive medium or a disruptive-medium precursor; directing the projectile to the first release position; and releasing the disruptive medium from the projectile at the first release position, such that the releasing of the disruptive medium forms a cloud of the disruptive medium.

DIRECTED-ENERGY WEAPON AND METHOD FOR DISPLAYING THE POSITION OF AN IMPACT POINT OF THE DIRECTED-ENERGY WEAPON

A method and apparatus for displaying a position of an impact point of a directed-energy weapon which has an effective beam optical system and an imaging optical system. An emission of primary radiation of the directed-energy weapon is triggered as an effective beam, and radiation exiting from an irradiated object is received by the imaging optical system and directed onto a camera of a screen. A beam bundle cross section of an effective beam is covered with a reflective optical auxiliary element, the effective beam or the auxiliary beam is triggered with the beam bundle cross section covered, and primary radiation of the effective beam or of the auxiliary beam which is reflected by the reflective optical auxiliary element is received by the imaging optical system and directed onto a spot of the camera as the impact point.

DIRECTED ENERGY WEAPON
20170234658 · 2017-08-17 ·

A directed energy weapon includes a number of laser units, each including a fiber laser generating an output beam with a power of at least 1 kW from a fiber, an objective lens arrangement for focusing the output beam into a focused beam directed towards a target, and a fine adjustment mechanism fir adjusting a direction of the focused beam. A beam deflector arrangement is deployed to deflect a portion of the focused beam from each laser unit as a deflected beam in a direction in predefined relation to a direction of the focused beam. An angle sensing unit generates an output indicative of a current direction of said deflected beam for each of said laser units. A controller actuates the fine adjustment mechanisms based on the output from the angle sensing unit to maintain a desired relative alignment between directions of the focused beams.

Disclosed are systems and methods of flexibly cooling thermal loads by providing a thermal energy storage cooling system having a nucleation cooling system for at least initiating nucleation of a phase change media within the thermal energy storage system.

Method and device for local stabilization of a radiation spot on a remote target object

A method for local stabilization of a radiation spot formed by a high energy laser beam includes receiving radiation reflected by the target object, where the radiation reflected by the target object passes through the same optical path as the high energy laser beam. An image processing is performed by analyzing and comparing the image of the illuminated target object or part of the illuminated target object to at least one image of the illuminated target object or part of the illuminated target object produced at a prior point in time. A correction signal is computed, with which an optical correction device is actuated. A filter correction signal is produced by a filter device, while a controller correction signal is produced by a fine tracking controller. Finally, the correction signal is formed from the filter correction signal and the controller correction signal.

LASER BEAM PROJECTION SYSTEM WITH DYNAMIC PHASE COMPENSATION

A laser beam projection system builds on a coherent imaging to project a tightly focused laser beam onto a remote object. Coherent flood illumination and local oscillator (LO) illumination are based on one master oscillator. The coherent flood illumination is directed toward a remote object, with a second laser beam directed onto an aimpoint on the same object. A Doppler sensor provides Doppler shift data used to produce Doppler-shifted LO illumination received by a focal plane array, together with the return flood illumination. Interference between the Doppler-shifted LO illumination and the return flood illumination facilitates imaging the object despite the velocity. The wavefront error of the flood illumined remote object image is computed and compared to the desired wavefront of the second laser beam at the aimpoint, with the difference applied to a deformable mirror to shape the second laser beam wavefront for obtaining a desired aimpoint intensity profile.
