Operation Of An Internal Combustion Engine With High Alcohol Content In The Fuel
Various embodiments include a method for starting an internal combustion engine comprising: in a first phase after a starting process, setting a throttle valve to a value near to zero so the pressure in the intake tract is lowered below the ambient pressure and injecting a fuel into the intake tract above a rich combustion limit at which the fuel/air mixture would still just be combustible; in a second phase, reducing the fuel mass as a function of the pressure; in a third phase shorter than the second phase, further reducing the fuel mass and increasing the opening of the throttle valve to increase the pressure in the intake tract; and in a fourth phase, increasing the fuel mass as a function of rising pressure in the intake tract.
SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR CONTROLLING FUEL INJECTION IN FLEX-FUEL VEHICLE
Disclosed are a method and system for controlling fuel injection in response to a change in the content of ethanol in a FFV having oxygen sensors and an ethanol sensor. The system includes an ethanol content change detection unit configured to detect a change in the content of ethanol, a flow rate calculation unit configured to calculate a volumetric flow rate of blending fuel and to integrate the calculated value, a condition determination unit configured to determine whether the change in the content of ethanol satisfies a condition for applying a fuel injection correction value, a control execution determination unit configured to determine whether to apply the fuel injection correction value by comparing the volumetric flow rate integration value with a preset second reference value, and a controller configured to determine a fuel injection correction value and to adjust an amount of fuel injection.
Multifuel automotive engine-derived systems for clean grid load balancing and non-grid electricity applications
Modestly modified automotive engine powered generator systems to substantially improve capability for providing renewable electricity powered grid reliability and energy storage are disclosed. The use of these engines to improve capability for non-grid electricity generation, including affordable and clean fast charging of electric vehicles, is also disclosed. In one embodiment, these automotive engines use high RPM and stoichiometric air fuel ratio operation so as to provide the advantages of substantially reduced cost and NOx emissions. These engines also have multifuel capability that provides highly flexible use of low carbon fuels (such as hydrogen, methanol and ammonia) as well as the use of present fuels that are widely available. When these low-carbon fuels are produced with excess electricity from the grid and supplied to the grid when there is an electricity-supply shortfalls, they can serve as a means of energy storage.
Systems and methods for improving operation of a highly dilute engine
Systems and methods for improving combustion in a highly exhaust gas diluted engine are disclosed. The methods and systems may be provided in an engine that is supplied two different types of fuel.
Systems and methods for electrically heated exhaust catalyst diagnostics
Methods and systems are provided for diagnosing an electric heater configured to increase a temperature of an exhaust catalyst positioned in an exhaust system of an engine. In one example, a method comprises diagnosing the electric heater by activating the electric heater, routing air flow from the exhaust system to an intake of the engine, and indicating the electric heater is degraded based on a test temperature in the intake being below a threshold temperature. In this way, the electric heater may be diagnosed without inclusion of costly sensors in the exhaust catalyst, and where such diagnosis conducted periodically may reduce release of undesired emissions to atmosphere.
OPTIMIZED FUEL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR DIRECT INJECTION ETHANOL ENHANCEMENT OF GASOLINE ENGINES
Fuel management system for enhanced operation of a spark ignition gasoline engine. Injectors inject an anti-knock agent such as ethanol directly into a cylinder. It is preferred that the direct injection occur after the inlet valve is closed. It is also preferred that stoichiometric operation with a three way catalyst be used to minimize emissions. In addition, it is also preferred that the anti-knock agents have a heat of vaporization per unit of combustion energy that is at least three times that of gasoline.
SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR COPING WITH MALFUNCTION OF ETHANOL SENSOR OF FLEX FUEL VEHICLE
The present invention relates to a system for coping with a malfunction of an ethanol sensor of a FFV. The present invention provides a system for coping with a malfunction of an ethanol sensor of a FFV, the system including: a driving condition detector configured to determine whether a driving condition of the FFV is satisfied; an air-fuel ratio control condition detector configured to determine whether an air-fuel ratio control condition is satisfied; a timer unit configured to calculate a timer value by measuring time when an ethanol content value measured in the ethanol sensor is constant and when the driving condition and the air-fuel ratio control condition are satisfied; and a controller configured to synchronize an ethanol-content learned value with the ethanol content value measured in the ethanol sensor when it is determined that the timer value calculated in the timer unit is higher than a preset critical value.
Air/fuel ratio control apparatus for general-purpose engine
In an apparatus for controlling an air/fuel ratio of a general-purpose internal combustion engine using mixed fuel containing alcohol and gasoline and operated at a desired engine speed inputted by the operator while a throttle opening is regulated such that a detected engine speed converges to the inputted desired engine speed, a fuel injection amount determined for mixed fuel based on fuel injection amount characteristics is increased/decreased when a load is kept constant and the output air/fuel ratio is estimated to correct the fuel injection amount by the estimated air/fuel ratio, while a switch (knob) is installed to be manipulated by the operator to switch the fuel injection amount characteristics.
Injection device, internal combustion engine, and method for operating an internal combustion engine
An injection device for an internal combustion engine is described, which has a first fuel injector for injecting fuel having a first fuel composition based on ethanol, and a separate second fuel injector for injecting fuel having a second fuel composition, which differs from the first fuel composition, the injection device having a heating device for preheating exclusively the fuel having the first fuel composition and injected by way of the first fuel injector.
SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR PARTICULATE FILTER CLEANING
Methods and systems are provided for cleaning an exhaust particulate filter by routing air via the exhaust particulate filter during a vehicle-off condition. In one example, during vehicle-off conditions, a turbocharger may be reverse rotated via an electric motor or an engine may be reverse rotated via an electric machine to route air via the exhaust particulate filter and the soot collected from the particulate filter may then be deposited on an air filter coupled to the intake manifold. During a subsequent engine start, the soot from the intake air filter may be routed to the engine cylinders for combustion.
