MULTIPLE FUEL TANK PURGE SYSTEM AND METHOD
A multiple fuel tank purge system and method includes providing a pair of fuel tanks, including a main fuel tank for containing impure fuel and a separate, auxiliary fuel tank that contains commercial canned fuel. The engine runs on the impure fuel from the main fuel tank while the engine is in normal use, and then employs a shutdown cycle that switches to the commercial canned fuel from the auxiliary fuel tank for some pre-set time period. This arrangement allows the engine to be purged of the impure fuel (by burning the impure fuel during the shutdown cycle) and replaced by the commercial pre-mixed fuel before the engine is finally shut down. The system may further include a novel fuel cap with a fuel line, a tank within a tank fuel container, and/or an electronically actuated shutdown cycle mechanism.
Device For Modifying The Amount Of Fuel Combusted For An Electronically Fuel Injected Combustion Engine
A device that enables gasoline internal combustion engines to efficiently use fuel with higher ethanol content. The device measures various data such as ethanol content, RPM, temperature, intake air pressure, mass airflow, exhaust gas, crank sensor, among other data, to determine to an ideal enrichment pulse duration to apply to the fuel injector.

Method and device for starting an internal combustion engine having high alcohol content in the fuel
A method and a corresponding device are disclosed for starting an internal combustion engine designed for alcohol or a high content of alcohol in a mixed alcohol-gasoline fuel, including setting an early starting ignition time point in a first time period beginning immediately after the activation of the starting process of the engine. The rotational speed of the internal combustion engine is monitored and the number of the cylinder working cycles is summed during the starting process and, upon exceeding a predetermined rotational speed threshold value, the number of those cylinder working cycles is summed in which there occurs a rotational speed increase greater than a predetermined threshold value. The number of the cylinder working cycles is compared with predetermined threshold values and, upon reaching or exceeding the threshold values, the ignition time point is shifted starting from the early ignition time point toward a late ignition time point.
Adaptive engine control module
An apparatus intercepts and modifies sensor signals generated by vehicle sensors and provides the modified signals to an engine control unit in the vehicle. The engine control unit is configured to receive the modified sensor signals and generate engine control signals based thereon. The apparatus includes a fuel composition sensor and a fuel control module. The fuel composition sensor senses characteristics of fuel in the vehicle and generates a fuel composition signal based on the sensed characteristics. The fuel control module, which intercepts the sensor signals from the vehicle sensors, includes a processor programmed to generate modified sensor signals based on the intercepted sensor signals and the fuel composition signal. Based on the modified sensor signals, the engine control unit optimizes the performance of the engine for a given ratio of alcohol to gasoline in an alcohol/gasoline fuel blend.
OPTIMIZED FUEL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR DIRECT INJECTION ETHANOL ENHANCEMENT OF GASOLINE ENGINES
Fuel management system for enhanced operation of a spark ignition gasoline engine. Injectors inject an anti-knock agent such as ethanol directly into a cylinder. It is preferred that the direct injection occur after the inlet valve is closed. It is also preferred that stoichiometric operation with a three way catalyst be used to minimize emissions. In addition, it is also preferred that the anti-knock agents have a heat of vaporization per unit of combustion energy that is at least three times that of gasoline.
Systems and methods for refueling
Methods and systems are provided for refilling a fuel tank devoid of fuel vapors. In one example, a method may include, prior to an upcoming refueling event, conditioning a fuel vapor-less fuel tank by operating a fuel pump. Operation of the fuel pump may agitate and vaporize the residual fuel in the fuel tank.
Port Injection System For Reduction Of Particulates From Turbocharged Direct Injection Gasoline Engines
The present invention describes a fuel-management system for minimizing particulate emissions in turbocharged direct injection gasoline engines. The system optimizes the use of port fuel injection (PFI) in combination with direct injection (DI), particularly in cold start and other transient conditions. In the present invention, the use of these control systems together with other control systems for increasing the effectiveness of port fuel injector use and for reducing particulate emissions from turbocharged direct injection engines is described. Particular attention is given to reducing particulate emissions that occur during cold start and transient conditions since a substantial fraction of the particulate emissions during a drive cycle occur at these times. Further optimization of the fuel management system for these conditions is important for reducing drive cycle emissions.
Integrated fuel composition and pressure sensor
Methods and systems are provided for an integrated fuel composition-pressure sensor. In one example, the integrated sensor may include a set of cylindrical capacitors and a set of plate capacitors with a common capacitor element shared between the sets. A composition of fuel may be determined from the set of cylindrical capacitors and a pressure of fuel may be determined from the set of plate capacitors.
Control device and control method for vehicle
An air amount control valve of a vehicle changes an intake air amount drawn into a cylinder. A fuel cutoff process stops fuel injection from a fuel injection valve when stopping combustion in the cylinder in a case in which a crankshaft is rotating. When execution of the fuel cutoff process is requested, a temperature-increase limiting process is executed to draw fresh air into a catalyst by increasing the intake air amount through control of the air amount control valve. In a case in which an anomaly occurs in driving of the air amount control valve when executing the temperature-increase limiting process, an amount of air drawn into the catalyst is increased by increasing an engine speed.
