Various embodiments include a method for actuating a camshaft adjuster of an internal combustion engine, in which a current is generated in an electric motor of the camshaft adjuster comprising: measuring an instantaneous strength of the current; calculating a mean value of the measured strength of the current over a predefined elapsed time; measuring a temperature of the camshaft adjuster; comparing the mean value of the measured strength of the current to a threshold value obtained from a characteristic diagram stored in a memory based on the measured temperature and the predefined elapsed time; and reducing the current if the calculated mean value of the strength of the current is higher than the threshold value.
ENGINE TORQUE LIMIT CONTROL
A method for controlling a torque limit of an engine, which includes activating a power boost mode in which an enhanced engine torque limit for the engine is temporarily enabled in place of a normal engine torque limit for the engine. In this way, on receipt of a transient load demand during an operational period of the power boost mode, a fuel rate of the engine may be increased to attempt to meet the transient load demand while maintaining an engine torque of the engine within the enhanced engine torque limit.
Controller and method for operating starter motor
Embodiments of the present invention provide a controller for a starter motor operable to receive a first input indicative of an engine shutdown being required, a second input indicative of a change-of-mind event having occurred after initiation of engine shutdown and a third input indicative of the engine position. After receipt of the first input the controller is operable to monitor the third input and to determine an expected engine rotation direction indicative of the expected rotation direction of the engine after a predetermined delay. If the expected engine rotation direction is positive and the second input is received then the controller is configured to control the output means to cause the starter motor of the engine to be actuated upon receipt of the second input. If the expected engine rotation direction is negative and the second input is received then the controller is configured to delay controlling the output means to cause the starter motor of the engine to be actuated until a determination is made that the expected rotation direction is positive. Advantageously, the controller calculates the expected engine rotation direction before receipt of the input indicative of the change-of-mind event having occurred, thereby reducing the time required to determine whether or not the starter motor can be actuated.

A method for monitoring crankcase pressure, in which a learning curve is calculated according to a target-actual deviation of the crankcase pressure, the target crankcase pressure is adjusted according to the learning curve, and a limit curve is calculated according to the target crankcase pressure. The actual crankcase pressure is monitored for exceedance of the limit curve. After an engine start, upon identification of a steady-state operation of the internal combustion engine, the actual crankcase pressure is compared with a limit value and, if the limit value is identified as being exceeded, the learning curve and, as a result, the limit curve are reset to their initial values.

The method comprises setting an upper limit on a duty cycle of a pulse width modulation (PWM) signal for controlling the valve, generating the PWM signal with the duty cycle less than or equal to the upper limit and applying the PWM signal to the valve, monitoring the system parameter as the PWM signal is applied, and increasing the upper limit on the duty cycle over time until the system parameter reaches a target.

A method for controlling starting of a mild hybrid vehicle includes receiving a starting-request signal and in response, increasing a rotation speed of the engine by driving the MHSG by electricity supplied from a battery. Status data of the mild hybrid vehicle for controlling starting of the engine is monitored to obtain an engine rotation speed from the status data and determine an injection-starting rotation speed based on the status data. When the engine rotation speed is greater than the injection-starting rotation speed, fuel injection of the engine is started.
