NVH management in diesel CDA modes

A method for entering and exiting cylinder deactivation modes in a diesel engine, comprises monitoring an engine speed from an idle engine speed to a governed engine speed and monitoring an engine load. If the monitored engine speed is the idle engine speed up to the governed engine speed, and if the engine load is less than the predetermined low load condition, then implementation of a cylinder deactivation mode is restricted to one of a 2 cylinder deactivation mode, a 3 cylinder deactivation mode, or a 4 cylinder deactivation mode. A cylinder deactivation mode is selected for engine operation among the 2 cylinder deactivation mode, the 3 cylinder deactivation mode, and the 4 cylinder deactivation mode to operate the engine at an effective frequency that avoids two resonant frequencies of the vehicle and to operate the engine below a torsional vibration limit.

Methods and system for operating skipped cylinders to provide secondary air

Methods and systems are provided for providing secondary air to an exhaust system during catalyst warm-up. In one example, a method may include, responsive to a cold start of an engine: operating the engine with a number of unfired cylinders and a remaining number of fired cylinders each engine cycle, and adjusting exhaust mixing by adjusting an exhaust valve parameter of at least one unfired cylinder of the number of unfired cylinders. In this way, the unfired cylinders may provide the secondary air as well as increased mixing of the secondary air with burned exhaust gas from fired cylinders, thus increasing exotherm production in the exhaust system to increase a temperature of the catalyst.

Noise, vibration and harshness reduction in a skip fire engine control system

A variety of methods and arrangements for reducing noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) in a skip fire engine control system are described. In one aspect, a firing sequence is used to operate the engine in a skip fire manner. A smoothing torque is determined that is applied to a powertrain by an energy storage/release device. The smoothing torque is arranged to at least partially cancel out variation in torque generated by the skip fire firing sequence. Various methods, powertrain controllers, arrangements and computer software related to the above operations are also described.

System and method for deactivating engine cylinders

Systems and methods for determining which of an intake valve and an exhaust valve is to be deactivated first when an engine is operated in a variable displacement mode. In one example, an exhaust valve of the cylinder is deactivated before an intake valve of the cylinder when the engine is operated in a static variable displacement operating mode.

Cylinder charge trapping strategies based on predictive number of skips and staggered implementation of valvetrain dependent operational strategies for internal combustion engines

A system and method for controlling an internal combustion engine involving (1) cylinder trapping strategies where one of several pneumatic spring types are dynamically selected for cylinders based at least partially on a predicted number of upcoming skips for each of the cylinders respectively and/or (2) staggering various valvetrain dependent operational engine strategies as operating conditions permit as the internal combustion engine warms up following a cold start.

Cylinder deactivation and engine braking for thermal management

A method for exhaust temperature management in a multiple-cylinder, reciprocating-piston engine, comprising sensing a low temperature condition of the exhaust and implementing an increased heat output engine cycle pattern for the engine based on the sensed low temperature condition. The increased heat output engine cycle pattern comprises deactivating fuel injection to a first cylinder of the engine, the first cylinder comprising a piston reciprocating between top-dead-center and bottom-dead-center. Also, activating engine braking mode on the first cylinder by opening one or more valves when the piston is away from bottom-dead-center during a compression stroke. A second cylinder of the engine is fired in a combustion mode while the first cylinder is in engine braking mode.

Optimizing combustion recipes to improve engine performance and emissions for variable displacement engines

A system and method for transitioning a firing fraction of a variable displacement internal combustion engine when generating a desired torque output. During and following the transition to the second firing fraction, a combustion recipe is ascertained and used operating the cylinders of the variable displacement internal combustion engine to generate the desired torque output. The recipe is preferably optimized for the engine operating at the second firing fraction, at least relative to the previous charge of the previous combustion recipe used with the first firing fraction.

Motor torque smoothing on combustion engines by approximating a periodic waveform using sinusoids

Methods, systems, and devices for operating an engine controller in a vehicle for managing motor torque smoothing. One controller is configured to select a periodic disruptive waveform generated over a period of time to approximate that is associated with the vehicle being at idle, determine a first harmonic sinusoid from a group of harmonic sinusoids that reduces the error between an approximated waveform and the disruptive waveform, and initiate a supplemental quantity of torque during the period of time based on the disruption quantity of torque.
