It is a general object of the present invention to provide a new and less expensive method of creating a horizontal axis wind turbine for electrical power generation. This approach is based on a tensioned support ring in the shape of a regular polygon. This support ring is well suited to the construction of large wind turbines because it is very light, strong, and cost efficient to create. Also provided are two types of rotor supporting tower structures including a wheeled version for land use and another that floats on water. Additionally, a method of using the support ring to generate electrical power from underwater currents. Further provided is a rope drive method of transmitting energy from the support ring to a generator below. Finally, two methods of controlling blade pitch. Both methods have similar automatic feathering systems to protect against excessive rotational speeds.

A tension airfoil assembly includes an outer rim located concentrically with a hub supported by a plurality of spokes, each spoke extending therebetween. A series of airfoils, each airfoil having an aerodynamically lifting shape extending between a leading edge and a trailing edge. Each airfoil of the series of airfoils is assembled to the tension airfoil assembly by coupling an area of the airfoil proximate the leading edge to a leading edge spoke and an area of the airfoil proximate the trailing edge to a trailing edge spoke. The airfoils are arranged having a gap provided between the trailing edge of each forward located airfoil and the leading edge of each trailing located airfoil. The tension airfoil assembly can be employed as a propulsion and/or lifting device integrated into a vehicle, such as an airplane, a helicopter, a tandem rotor helicopter, etc.

Rotor blade shaped to enhance wake diffusion

A blade 20 for a horizontal-axis wind turbine rotor comprises a radially-outer, energy-extraction portion 32 and a radially-inner, ventilation portion 30. The radially-inner ventilation portion 30 is shaped to ventilate a central area 34 of a wake of the rotor during use such that it contains more kinetic energy compared to the wake from a conventional rotor design. The increased wind flow velocity at the centre 34 of the wake generates additional shear stresses, with corresponding turbulence development, which gives rise to increased wake diffusion.

Trailing edge assembly

Provided is a trailing edge assembly of a wind turbine rotor blade, which includes a mounting portion; a flap portion flexibly connected to the mounting portion so that a flap angle subtended between the mounting portion and the flap portion can be altered; a volume adjustable chamber arranged between the mounting portion and the flap portion and realised to alter its volume between a minimum volume associated with a minimum flap angle and a maximum volume associated with a maximum flap angle; and at least one tube to face into an airflow passing over the airfoil region of the rotor blade, and an inner orifice arranged to face into the interior of the volume adjustable chamber such that an airflow between the outer orifice and the inner orifice alters the volume of the volume adjustable chamber. Embodiments of the invention further describe a wind turbine rotor blade.
