Sealing bellows for a ball and socket joint comprising such a sealing bellows
11313410 · 2022-04-26 · ·

A sealing bellows for a ball joint having a housing-side sealing area, a stud-side sealing area, and an outlet opening arranged between the sealing areas and which penetrates a wall of the sealing bellows. The outlet opening is open in the unassembled state of the sealing bellows. The outlet opening is closed in the assembled state of a ball joint. The sealing bellows and/or the ball joint can be used for a multi-point link, particularly a two-point link.

The invention relates to a ball joint (10) for a wiper system, comprising a ball shell (12), a ball head (14) within the ball shell (12), a hinged rod (16) into which the ball shell (12) is inserted, and a securing means (18), wherein the securing means (18) engages around the hinged rod (16), in order to reduce an opening (20) in the ball shell (12) to a blocking distance (d), such that the ball head (15) can be removed from the ball shell (12). The invention further relates to a method for assembling the ball joint (10).

Boot with lubricant relief

A boot for a ball socket assembly in an automotive pivoting and/or rotating socket having a flange with one or more thinned sections or gates adjacent a point of attachment to a socket housing that provides an effective seal against contaminants when lubricant is not being added with external pressure and also flexes when exposed to internal pressure allowing contaminated lubricant to escape from the socket. A ring is embedded in the flange with inwardly directed teeth flanking the thinned sections or gates for securing the boot to the socket housing.

The tie rod end includes a housing with an inner bore that extends along a central axis. A stud is partially received in the inner bore and has a shank portion which extends out of the inner bore for attachment with a gearbox. The tie rod end further includes an elastic boot body which extends from a first boot end, which is sealed with the housing, to a second boot end. A boot bearing, which is made of a plastic material, is secured with the second boot end. The boot bearing is in a dynamic sealing engagement with the shank portion of the stud. The boot bearing presents a plurality of radially inwardly extending and annularly-shaped ribs that contact the shank portion.

Seal design

A seal includes an at least partially cylindrical annular body defining a radial direction, an axial direction, and a circumferential direction. The at least partially cylindrical annular body has a radially outer flange, a radially inner ring, and a resilient intermediate portion joining the radially outer flange to the radially inner ring. The radially outer flange defines a seal outer diameter and a flange axial thickness, and a ratio of the seal outer diameter to the flange axial thickness ranges from 14.0 to 15.0.

The disclosure provides a ball joint seal structure that includes a ferrule ring interposed between a small-diameter opening portion of a dust cover and a knuckle. The ball joint connects the knuckle to a stud, and a ball head provided on the end of the stud is accommodated in a socket in a rockable and rotatable manner. The dust cover connects a large-diameter opening that surrounds the socket, which houses the ball head, and a small-diameter opening portion, which surrounds the stud, by a membrane. The ferrule ring includes an annular portion that suppresses the entry of dust through a cutout produced when, for example, a pinch bolt type knuckle is adopted, and has an inclined portion, which inclines toward the dust cover, on the outer circumferential edge thereof.

A ball joint assembly includes a stud and a two-piece cup. The stud has a shank that is connectable to a first vehicle suspension component, and a ball end. The cup is (indirectly) connectable to a second vehicle suspension component, and that holds the ball within. A locking plate prevents the two pieces of the cup from unthreading, and allows the joint to be adjusted as the friction surfaces wear.
