A disk brake actuated preferably by compressed air, for a motor vehicle, includes an application mechanism. The application mechanism has a brake rotary lever which acts on a traverse in which there is arranged at least one readjusting spindle which acts on an application-side brake pad, having a readjusting device, and having a quick contact apparatus. The quick contact apparatus effects an advancing movement which is superposed on an actuation of the disk brake during the phase of overcoming an air gap. The quick contact apparatus has an intermediate element which is variable in terms of its position and which has at least a wedge-shaped design.

The slack adjuster comprises a gear set including (i) a worm wheel having an outer circumferential surface, and (ii) a worm shaft having a longitudinal central axis and meshed with the worm wheel. The worm shaft is rotated in one direction about its longitudinal central axis when the drum brake is applied and adjustment is required and in an opposite direction about its longitudinal central axis when the drum brake is released. The slack adjuster further comprises an anti-reversing member having an inner circumferential surface facing the outer circumferential surface of the worm wheel. The anti-reversing member allows rotation of the worm wheel when the drum brake is applied and prevents rotation of the worm wheel when the drum brake is released.

The invention is for automatic slack adjuster for an automobile with a housing having an aperture for receiving a brake cam shaft comprising of a worm gear coaxially mounted within the said housing aperture and configured to coaxially engage the brake cam shaft, such that the said worm gear and said cam shaft rotating together about a first axis. The arrangement has a bore with a single open end for receiving a worm clutch shaft. The said worm clutch shaft is mounted in the said housing to rotate about a second axis, which is perpendicular to first axis. The invention has only one side opening. The thrust load from the worm shaft is transferred through the thrust bush through the main housing of the assembly.
