The device and method of the invention are adapted to control temperature and humidity of the air in some defined volume such as a room in a house. The device consists of a quantity of hygroscopic material and means for passing air past or through the material. Direct temperature and humidity control occur when air is conditioned (heated and dried by sorption heating, or cooled and humidified by absorption cooling) and sent inside the room; indirect control is also possible, by affecting the temperature of the walls (the sorption material may occupy channels or spaces within the walls, which are then heated/cooled, indirectly heating/cooling the air in the room by conduction). A fan or blower will allow for forced convection of air in a desired path (e.g from outside the house, over/through the sorption material, and into the house, or in the opposite direction). A second fan and valves allow for more complex operations.

In a method and apparatus for conditioning air for an enclosure, a first ambient airstream is cooled by a cooling coil of a refrigerant cooling system to reduce temperature and humidity, passed through a segment of a rotating desiccant wheel to reduce moisture content and increase temperature, and then supplied to the enclosure. The desiccant wheel is regenerated by a second ambient airstream heated with a condenser coil of the refrigerant system and then passed through a regeneration segment of the desiccant wheel. A bypass plenum allows a third ambient airstream to be selectively heated and cooled independent of the evaporator coil and desiccant wheel in the first plenum. Heated air bypassed from the second ambient airstream or an independent heater can perform the selective heating in the bypass plenum. The airstream in the bypass plenum is then supplied with the air treated in the first plenum to the enclosure.

In order to implement above, the air conditioner according to the present disclosure includes an indoor unit including an evaporator of a heat pump configured to cool indoor air; and an outdoor unit including the evaporative cooler using evaporation latent heat of water generated from the humid channel to cool air which passes through the dry channel, a condenser of the heat pump cooled by air cooled while passing through the dry channel during a cooling mode, a condenser communication part provided so that some of the air which passes through the dry channel flows to the condenser, and a humid channel communication part provided so that the remaining air which passes through the dry channel flows to the humid channel.

A method for production of water from air includes cyclically and successively repeating the following two phases: a first phase a), which includes the following steps: a1) taking air from the outside, a2) conveying the air towards an enthalpic exchanger containing an adsorbent material that internally accumulates the moisture that is present in the air, a3) outputting dry air, and a second phase b), which includes the following steps: b1) supplying heat to the enthalpic exchanger by way of a low-temperature heat source, b2) conveying an air flow through the enthalpic exchanger, wherein the air in contact with the enthalpic exchanger is heated and at the same time collects the moisture contained in the adsorbent material, and b3) bringing the heated and humidified air flow to ambient temperature in order to cause the moisture contained therein to condense, thereby obtaining water.

In a third (economizer) mode of operation, the chiller is off and water from the heat sink is delivered to the cooling coil. Control valves, check valves, or both, are used to direct the flow of water, which are strategically placed in various water conduits.
