Radial engine-generator with overhead camshaft

A radial engine-generator includes an electric power generator and a radial engine. The radial engine-generator can be a mobile and portable unit, and is employable as a primary or back-up source of electric power at data centers, manufacturing facilities, electric vehicle charging stations, medical facilities, telecommunications, and residential neighborhoods, among many other applications. The electric power generator and radial engine are coupled together. The radial engine includes, among other components, multiple cylinders, multiple cylinder heads, and multiple overhead camshaft assemblies. The overhead camshaft assemblies are located at the cylinder heads and each include one or more camshafts. The camshaft(s) receive rotational drive input from a crankshaft of the radial engine. In certain implementations, camshaft carrier assemblies can be provided to support components of the overhead camshaft assemblies.

VARIABLE VALVE DEVICE

An OHV engine includes V-shaped banks, a crank shaft, a cam shaft connected to the crank shaft, a mechanical supercharger located between the V-shaped banks, and a power transmission supported by the cam shaft and that connects the crank shaft to the mechanical supercharger. The power transmission includes a gear mechanism with a gear ratio not greater than a predetermined value, and includes a first gear supported rotatably by the cam shaft and that rotates based on an output from the crank shaft, a second gear provided on a rotation shaft of the mechanical supercharger, and an idle gear that connects the first and second gears with each other. Cylinders are offset with respect to a center of the crank shaft on an anti-thrust side of the cylinders, and the mechanical supercharger is also offset with respect to a center of the crank shaft on the anti-thrust side. Cylinder heads are provided with oil cooling paths adjacent respective spark plugs.

Methods and systems for engine cranking

Methods and systems are provided for adjusting engine cranking. In one example, a method for an engine cold start may include extending engine cranking at least based on one or more engine cold start conditions, where extending engine cranking may increase an engine oil pressure in a plurality of camshaft phaser cavities of a variable camshaft timing (VCT) phaser. In some examples, the method may further include, after engine cranking, enabling fueling. In this way, fuel efficiency considerations may be balanced with increases to the engine oil pressure such that components of the VCT phaser may be actuated and/or lubricated.
