A method of operating an engine is provided. The method includes determining a temperature and a pressure of intake air, and a temperature and a pressure of exhaust generated by the engine. The method includes determining a work performed by the engine based at least on an engine speed of the engine, and determining heating losses of the engine. The method includes determining an enthalpy of the intake air based at least on the work, the heating losses, a heating value of a fuel used for combustion within the engine, and the temperature and the pressure of the exhaust. The method includes determining a humidity value of the intake air based on the enthalpy, temperature and pressure of the intake air and determining an amount of NOx based on the humidity value. The method further includes controlling an operation of the engine based on the determined amount of NOx.

INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE

An internal combustion engine includes a twin entry type turbocharger with which a first exhaust passage and a second exhaust passage respectively communicate individually, a communication path that causes the first exhaust passage and the second exhaust passage to communicate with each other, a communication valve that opens and closes the communication path, an abnormality diagnosis device that diagnoses presence or absence of abnormality of the communication valve, a variable valve timing mechanism capable of changing a period of valve overlap of the engine, and a control device. When it is determined that abnormality of a valve closure failure of the communication valve is present, the control device operates the mechanism to reduce the valve overlap in an operating state in which the communication valve is closed, more than in a case where it is determined that abnormality of a valve closure failure of the communication valve is absent.

SYSTEMS FOR AN ENGINE

Systems are provided for detecting a change in performance of an engine component. In one example, a system includes a first pressure sensor of a first exhaust manifold coupled to a first subset of cylinders of an engine, a second pressure sensor of a second exhaust manifold coupled to a second subset of cylinders of the engine, a passage coupling the first exhaust manifold to an intake manifold, and a controller configured to detect a change in performance of any cylinder of the engine based on frequency content from the first pressure sensor and from the second pressure sensor during both a first mode where no exhaust gas from the first exhaust manifold is provided to the intake manifold, and during a second mode where all exhaust gas from the first exhaust manifold is provided to the intake manifold, and adjust an operating parameter responsive to the change in performance.

DEVICE AND METHOD FOR PREDICTING THE EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION RATE

A device for predicting an exhaust gas recirculation rate of an internal combustion engine, which comprises an inlet system and at least one exhaust gas recirculation valve, is described. The device comprises a sensor arranged in the inlet system for determining the composition of the gas, a sensor for determining the position of the exhaust gas recirculation valve, and an evaluation apparatus. The evaluation apparatus is configured to determine and output a prediction of the exhaust gas recirculation rate based on a corrected estimate of the exhaust gas recirculation rate, wherein the estimate is based on the position of the exhaust gas recirculation valve and is corrected based on the composition of the gas as determined using the sensor.

In one example, a method includes predicting an engine torque profile based on current and future engine operating conditions. The method then models a compressor outlet temperature profile and reduces engine torque output to limit overheating of the compressor outlet.

A method for controlling a turbine of an engine system to achieve a desired boost pressure is provided. The method determines a desired exhaust gas pressure based on the desired boost pressure by using a model for a power balance between the turbine and a compressor of the engine system. The method generates a base command for controlling a position of a vane of the turbine based on a ratio of the desired exhaust gas pressure to a measured turbine outlet pressure.
