Engine control apparatus
When a difference between a target intake air amount during the reduced-cylinder operation, which is greater than a target intake air amount during the all-cylinder operation in a normal state, and an actual intake air amount is greater than an allowable deficient intake air amount, a preparatory control for increasing the actual intake air amount and shifting an ignition timing toward a retard side with respect to an ignition timing during the all-cylinder operation in the normal state. Then, at a time when the difference between the target intake air amount and the actual intake air amount becomes equal to or less than the allowable deficient intake air amount, the reduced-cylinder operation is started, wherein the allowable deficient intake air amount is set to a larger value when a current speed stage is a high speed stage than when it is a low speed stage.
Control apparatus for internal combustion engine
A control apparatus for an internal combustion engine is configured to: calculate measured data of MFB based on in-cylinder pressure detected by an in-cylinder pressure sensor; execute engine control based on a measured value of a specified fraction combustion point that is calculated based on the measured data of MFB; and calculate a first correlation index value for the measured data (current data) and the reference data of MFB and a second correlation index value for the current data and the immediately preceding past data. The engine control is suspended that uses the measured data of the specified fraction combustion point based on the current data when both of the first correlation index value and the second correlation index value are less than a determination value.
METHOD FOR MONITORING COMBUSTON PROCESSES IN A COMBUSTION ENGINE
A method for extracting characterizing features from an ion current trace retrieved from spark plugs of cylinders of an internal combustion engine, comprises the steps of: i. dividing the ion current signal into crank angle subintervals; ii. calculating a measure of ion current in each crank angle subinterval; and iii. Performing a calculation on the measure of ion currents from different subintervals such that the result of the calculation is dimension free. Further it relates to a method of monitoring combustion processes where a plurality of ion current signals from a number of spark plugs (4A, 4B) are retrieved and used in combination.
Multi-level skip fire
In one aspect, a method for controlling operation of an internal combustion engine is described. The engine is operated in a skip fire manner such that selected skipped working cycles are skipped and selected active working cycles are fired to deliver a desired engine output. A particular level of torque output is selected for each of the fired working chambers. Various methods, engine controllers, arrangements and systems related to the above method are also described.
Engine torque control with combustion phasing
An engine assembly includes an internal combustion engine with an engine block having at least one cylinder and at least one piston moveable within the at least one cylinder. A crankshaft is moveable to define a plurality of crank angles (CA) from a bore axis defined by the cylinder to a crank axis defined by the crankshaft. A controller is operatively connected to the internal combustion engine and configured to receive a torque request (T.sub.R). The controller is programmed to determine a desired combustion phasing (CA.sub.d) for controlling a torque output of the internal combustion engine. The desired combustion phasing is based at least partially on the torque request (T.sub.R) and a pressure-volume (PV) diagram of the at least one cylinder.
Traction control device
A traction control device reducing an output of an engine unit for suppressing a spin of a driving wheel of a motorcycle, includes: a first spin detection unit detecting a spin of a rear wheel based on a vehicle speed calculated from a rotation of a front wheel being a driven wheel to which a driving force is not transmitted from the engine unit, and a vehicle speed calculated from a rotation of the rear wheel being the driving wheel to which the driving force is transmitted; and a second spin detection unit detecting the spin of the rear wheel based on a vehicle speed calculated from the rotation of the front wheel, and a vehicle speed calculated from a rotation of the engine unit.
SYSTEMS AND METHODS TO REDUCE TORSIONAL CONDITIONS IN AN INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE
An internal combustion engine includes a number of cylinders and a controller operably connected to interpret operating parameters related to the operation of the number of cylinders. A cylinder torque adjustment for each cylinder is determined from the operating parameters to provide a torque balancing response that reduces noise, vibration and/or harshness in engine operation.

INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE CONTROL FOR IMPROVED FUEL EFFICIENCY
A variety of methods and arrangements for improving the fuel efficiency of internal combustion engines based on skip fire operation of the engine are described. In one aspect the skip fire decisions are made on a working cycle by working cycle basis. During selected skipped working cycles, the corresponding cylinders are deactivated such that air is not pumped through the cylinder during the selected skipped working cycles. In some implementations, the cylinders are deactivated by holding associated intake and exhaust valves closed such that an air charge is not present in the working chamber during the selected skipped working cycles.
System and method for controlling operation of an engine
A method involves comparing a determined operating parameter of an engine, with a predefined operating parameter. The method further involves controlling a fuel source and an ignition source of the engine so as to operate at least one engine cylinder in a skip fire mode for at least one cycle of a crank shaft when the determined operating parameter is greater than the predefined operating parameter. The controlling involves transitioning the fuel source from a normal mode to the skip fire mode for the at least one cycle of the crank shaft either before transitioning the ignition source from the normal mode to the skip fire mode or when the ignition source is operated in the normal mode.
