An elongate energy conversion device vertically oriented in a body of water with an oscillating core that converts wave movement into oscillating movement of a central housing, the housing including a set of ballscrews and threaded shafts which are then rotated and attached with generators to convert the rotational motion into electrical energy. The oscillating core is substantially enclosed by a movement resistant shell with a horizontally-extending heave plate which actuates the core depending on whether the oscillating core is being pulled upward from an attached float impacted by a wave crest or downward from an attached weight during a wave fall.

A dynamic adaptive mooring system for wave energy converters (WEC) is disclosed that has a mooring configuration that has a set of fixed mooring lines, and a set of movable mooring lines. When an incoming wave train interacts with the fixed WECs, a set of wave interference points that have higher wave amplitudes than the incoming wave train are formed downstream of the fixed WECs. The movable WECs are then positioned at the interface points to optimize wave energy transfer.

The drive assembly further comprises an energy storing member comprising a biasing member coupled to one or more of: the actuating member, the energy transfer member; the energy storing member being arranged to cause the actuating member or the energy transfer member to move position. The actuating member is arranged to move the energy transfer member from a first stroke position to a second stroke position; and the first stroke position and the second stroke position define distal end points of a working stroke; the working stroke arranged so as to drive said energy converter.

Wave-direction-adaptive wave focusing type wave energy convertor with multiple water channels

A wave-direction-adaptive wave focusing type wave energy convertor with multiple water channels, comprising an energy acquisition system, an energy conversion system and a support system. Wave focusing is carried out through double water channels, so that the movement amplitude of water particles behind a box is doubled. A device is connected with a fixed pile through universal bearings, so that an opening of the device is always faced to a wave flow direction, which adapts to different seasons and water conditions, has low environmental requirements, and can be used in a wide sea area. Several coils of pretension spring compression are arranged in a winding barrel, so that a nylon rope connected to a buoy is ensured to be always in a straightened state and not derail from pulley blocks to work abnormally due to looseness whether the buoy is at a wave crest or a wave trough.

Nonlinear hydrostatic control of a wave energy converter

Increased energy harvesting is realized using a nonlinear buoy geometry for reactive power generation. By exploiting the nonlinear dynamic coupling between the buoy geometry and the potential wideband frequency spectrum of incoming waves in the controller/buoy design, increased power can be captured in comparison to conventional wave energy converter designs. In particular, the reactive power and energy storage system requirements are inherently embedded in the nonlinear buoy geometry, therefore requiring only simple rate-feedback control.

Power packet networks for wave energy converter arrays

One of the biggest challenges for all renewable energy sources (RES) is that they are variable power generators which will require reactive power or energy storage systems (ESS) to provide reliable power quality (ideally power factor of one) at the power grid generation side. The present invention is directed to a power packet network (PPN) for integrating wave energy converter (WEC) arrays into microgrids. Specifically, an array of WECs can be physically positioned such that the incoming regular waves will produce an output emulating an N-phase AC system such that the PPN output power is constant. ESS requirements are thereby minimized whilst maintaining grid stability with high power quality. This will enable RES integration onto a future smart grid for large-scale adoption and cost reduction while preserving high efficiency, reliability, and resiliency.

A wave energy conversion system has a float and a power generation drum with a drum housing rotationally attached to the float by a shaft attachment. The shaft attachment allows a rotational movement of the drum housing and the float relative to each other. The drum housing holds a cable reel with a cable having a first end part connected to the cable reel and a second end part, where the cable reel is an integral part of or connected to the drum housing to rotate with the drum housing. The float can be positioned in the sea by having the second end part of the cable attached to a submerged structure or to the sea bed. When the float is positioned in the sea, the float may be moved by the waves, which movements cause a rotational movement of the drum housing with electric power being generated.
