Wire ring combustion seal for automotive engine
A leak-proof sealing system is provided for sealing combustion chambers of an automotive engine. The system comprises a head gasket compressed between an engine block and a cylinder head, the head gasket comprising a gasket plate, a plurality of circular combustion apertures positioned on the gasket plate, the plurality of circular combustion apertures configured to register with a plurality of cylinder bore openings of the engine block, a plurality of bolt apertures distributed on the gasket plate, the plurality of bolt apertures alternating with the plurality of circular combustion apertures, and a plurality of wire rings, each wire ring extending circumferentially around a corresponding circular combustion aperture of the plurality of circular combustion apertures, where a surface of each wire ring includes a selective metal coating on sections of the wire ring spanning between two consecutive bolt apertures of the plurality of bolt apertures, and wherein sections of the wire ring located closer to the plurality of bolt apertures are devoid of metal coating. In one example, the system helps increase stress locally and reduces fatigue lift motion, thereby improving sealing and engine durability.
Flat gaskets and the use thereof
A gasket is described herein. The gasket might be used between internal combustion engine components. The gasket might be comprised of metal. The gasket might have several layers including a sealing layer and a compression layer. The gasket includes sections having different radii of curvature. The different radii of curvature might have particular relationships to one another.
COMBUSTION CYLINDER HEAD GASKET
A multi-layer steel gasket includes a pair of outermost steel layers having a plurality of combustion openings. The outermost layers are generally planar and free of elastic beads in a compression region of the gasket immediately surrounding the combustion openings. A pair of metal sealing rings are associated with each of the combustion openings and are disposed between the outermost layers and are formed with opposed full beads that face away from one another in the compression region of the gasket around each cylinder opening. The sealing rings each having a thickness of at least 0.3 mm and which is greater than a thickness of the outermost layer. At least one distance layer is disposed between the outermost layers, wherein when the compression region is fully compressed, the thickness of the combined layers of gasket in the compression region is greater than the thickness of the combined layers of the gasket in a body of the gasket adjacent the compression region.
CYLINDER HEAD GASKET
A cylinder head gasket is disclosed having a carrier layer, in which at least one through-opening for a combustion chamber is located, and a combustion chamber sealing element, which is inserted in the through-opening and extends in an intrinsically closed manner. In some examples, at least one gap is formed at least in some sections between the carrier layer and the combustion chamber sealing element, the gap extending around the combustion chamber sealing element at least in some sections. Further, in some example, the carrier layer has at least one slot-like or groove-like channel, which extends from the at least one gap between the carrier layer and the combustion chamber sealing element to the outer edge of the carrier layer.
COMBUSTION SEAL INCLUDING CYLINDER LINER AND SHIM
An engine includes an engine block and a cylinder head mounted to the engine block. The engine block includes a bore elongated along an axis and a liner disposed in the bore and extending annularly about the axis. The liner includes a seal surface and a fire dam disposed radially inward from the seal surface. The fire dam extends along the axis from the seal surface towards the cylinder head. The engine further includes a head gasket disposed between the engine block and the cylinder head. The head gasket extends endlessly around the fire dam. The engine further includes a shim seated between the seal surface and the head gasket and abutting the seal surface and the head gasket. The shim is disposed radially outward from the fire dam and extending annularly about the axis.
