Device and method for counteracting contact-impact events of elongated sub-projectiles

A holding device and method for decreasing the contact-impact event on sub-projectiles when fired from a barrel, cylinder, carrier shell or the like includes a core and at least two legs that at least partially enclose at least one sub-projectile each. When a projectile is fired from a barrel or the like the sub-projectiles load the legs of the device which are deformed and open up and release the sub-projectiles in a controlled manner without tumbling which leads them to hit and penetrate their target with the short-side. A holding device including sub-projectiles and a projectile including the holding device are also provided.

A projectile includes a hollow body carrying a payload formed of inert sub-projectiles that can be dispersed on trajectory contained in a cup including a piston closing one of its ends, the body at its rear part with a base housing a pyrotechnic charge separated from the sub-projectiles by the piston, which can translate with respect to the body of the projectile to push the cup and the sub-projectiles axially out of the body. The cup is formed of independent sectors. The piston is secured to the sectors when contained in the body and the cup is secured to the body by a connecting apparatus weakened to break under the force of the piston pushed by the gases generated by the pyrotechnic charge. An ogive is secured to the cup by a securing apparatus that is coaxial with the longitudinal axis of the projectile and locked by the sectors.

INTELLIGENT MUNITION

A small arms form factor munition may package a control section with a deployment section in a munition case. The control section can have a first drag mechanism and a second drag mechanism. Firing the munition case from a firearm propels the load from the munition case and barrel of the firearm towards a target. A drag mechanism is selected and activated by the control section in response to a detected distance to the target while the load is in flight. The drag mechanism alters a flight characteristic of the load.

TECHNIQUES SUITABLE FOR USE WITH AN OBJECT FOR MOVING THROUGH A FLUID, SUCH AS A MUNITION OR RECONNAISSANCE PROJECTILE

According to a first aspect of the invention, there is provided an object for moving through a fluid, the object comprising: an outer housing, arranged to be exposed to a hydrostatic pressure exerted by the fluid; a strain gauge, arranged to obtain an indication of the hydrostatic pressure, wherein a first part of the strain gauge is arranged to be in contact with the outer housing, such that the strain gauge is arranged to obtain an indication of the hydrostatic pressure by obtaining an indication of the strain on the housing.

Rear ejection payload dispersal projectile

A 40 millimeter (mm) projectile is capable of deploying a payload out of the rear of the projectile. The projectile carries the payload an extended distance from the muzzle and then disperses the payload after a command is provided to the projectile. The projectile includes a proximity fuze which allows it to sense a target and disperse the payload at a given distance from the target. Alternatively, a time-based fuze or radio frequency (RF) based fuze may be employed instead. The payload may be used against a variety of targets, such as personnel, vehicle or aerial targets. In addition, the projectile could be used as a training device for proximity, preprogrammed or RF-controlled fuzed projectiles.

PROJECTILE WITH PYROTECHNICALLY TIMED RELEASE OF A SECONDARY PAYLOAD

The present invention relates to a firearm projectile capable of releasing a secondary payload mid-flight through a pyrotechnic timing mechanism. Once the firearm is fired, the powder in the casing pushes out the projectile as a typical round. In addition, the powder ignites the delay column. The formulation and amount of delay pyrotechnics determines the delay time. When the delay column is burned, the final portion ignites an expelling charge. The expelling charge builds pressure in the projectile casing and separates the base plug from the main projectile housing. The expelling assembly pushes out the secondary payload out the rear of the projectile. Although the payload exits the rear of the projectile at minimum velocity, the net velocity of the payload is still in the forward direction.
