Emission control system

A vehicle includes an engine, a fueling system, an exhaust assembly, and a controller. The fueling system controls fuel to the engine. The exhaust assembly releases combustion gas from the engine and includes at least one sensor and a catalytic converter. The controller is configured to control the engine, the fueling system and the exhaust assembly. The controller evaluates engine state and an output from the at least one sensor and commands a fueling strategy to control an oxygen storage capacity of the catalytic converter based on the engine state and output from the at least one sensor.

Control strategy for automatic shutdown of engine

A system is provided for automatically shutting down an engine in response to the engine operating while in an enclosed space to prevent dangers associated with carbon monoxide accumulating in the enclosed space. The engine has an oxygen sensor in its exhaust that is configured to detect oxygen in the exhaust or ambient. A controller can be programmed to shut down the engine based on a determination that the engine is operating in a confined or enclosed space by analyzing a rate of change of the oxygen content in the exhaust or ambient, and compares the rate to a threshold. The shutdown may be commanded if the rate exceeds the threshold. In some embodiments, the shutdown may additionally be in response to a temperature of the ambient air or intake air increasing, which furthers the confidence of the determination that the engine is operating in a confined or enclosed space.

Method for diagnosing an oxygen probe

Disclosed is a method for diagnosis of an oxygen probe for a combustion engine, with the steps: When an engine's fuel injection is inactive, measuring the output electric voltage from the oxygen probe; If the measured output electrical voltage of the oxygen probe is greater than a predetermined minimum voltage threshold, measuring a pressure prevailing in an intake distributor of the engine; If the measured pressure in the intake distributor is less than a predetermined minimum pressure threshold, increasing the pressure to a value greater than the predetermined minimum pressure threshold; Determining the time period between the time when the output electrical voltage of the probe falls below a second predetermined voltage threshold and the time when the output electrical voltage of the probe falls below a third predetermined voltage threshold; and diagnosing the oxygen probe depending on elapsed the time period.

A control module controls the at least one combustion source operating parameter and the at least one pollution control device operating parameter based on the at least one measured pollutant level.

The control unit is further configured to operate the multiplicity of emission-relevant functions within the planning time period as a function of the planning emission value.

SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR OPERATING A COMBUSTION CHAMBER

A method for operating a combustion chamber is provided. The method includes obtaining a carbon monoxide reading at an exit of the combustion chamber via a carbon monoxide sensor, and deriving an oxygen set point trim based at least in part on the carbon monoxide reading and a carbon monoxide set point via a controller. The method further includes determining a stability status of the combustion chamber via a combustion stability sensor, and adjusting an oxygen set point of the combustion chamber with the oxygen set point trim based at least in part on the stability status via the controller. The oxygen set point defines a desired oxygen level at the exit of the combustion chamber.
