A process for preparing a filter plug for a smoking article, such as a cigarette, includes: (a) freeze-drying a solution of a biopolymer to form a structure; and (b) cutting the structure to a predetermined dimension, to thereby prepare a filter plug for a smoking article. Another process for preparing a filter plug for a smoking article, such as a cigarette, includes: (a) extruding a mixture of a foaming agent and a biopolymer comprising a protein to form a structure; and (b) cutting the structure to a predetermined dimension, to thereby form a filter plug for a smoking article.

There is provided a smoking article (100) incorporating an additive delivery system. The additive delivery system comprises a frangible capsule (110) comprising a breakable shell containing a liquid core. The shell can be broken by means of a pressure to release a single burst of the liquid core. Further, the additive delivery system comprises a sustained-release liquid delivery material (111) comprising a liquid composition. The liquid composition is releasable in discrete amounts from the liquid delivery material upon compression of the liquid delivery material so as to selectively combine the first and second additive. The frangible capsule and the sustained-release liquid delivery material are spaced apart, such that a consumer can separately and selectively activate the release of additive from either component of the delivery system.

A smoking article (10) incorporates a sustained release liquid delivery material (20), the liquid delivery material comprising a closed matrix structure defining a plurality of domains. A liquid composition is trapped within the domains and is releasable from the closed matrix structure upon compression of the material. The liquid delivery material (20) provides a sustained release of the liquid composition over a range of force of at least 5 Newtons. Preferably, the liquid delivery material is provided within the filter (14) of the smoking article (10).

A cooling cigarette filter and a smoking product are provided. The cooling cigarette filter comprises a cooling section. The cooling section is provided with one or more channels connecting two ends of the cooling section, and an inner surface of each channel is coated with a cooling material. The cooling material comprises an inorganic phase change material and PEG, and the inorganic phase change material comprises at least one of Na2CO3.Math.10H2O, CH3COONa.Math.3H2O, CaCl2.Math.4H2O, and Na2SO4.Math.10H2O. There is provided a smoking article having an aerosol generating substrate and a mouthpiece. The mouthpiece indudes a cavity at least partially filled with a particulate material, such as activated carbon,and contains at least one breakable capsule of a liquid flavourant at least partially surrounded by the particulate material, such that the force required to break the capsule within the mouthpiece to release the liquid flavourant is less than three times the inherent burst strength of the capsule.

Embodiments of the invention relate to porous carbon and methods of preparing porous carbon. In some embodiments, the prepared porous carbon exhibits enhanced selectivity for hydrogen cyanide (HCN), In one embodiment, the method comprises impregnating activated carbon with a metal oxide, such as zinc oxide.
