Menthol-sorbed activated charcoal stably holding menthol during storage, and smoothly releasing menthol only during passage of tobacco smoke therethrough is provided. The menthol-sorbed activated charcoal is featured in that to activated charcoal having a specific surface area of 1500 m.sup.2/g or more but 1700 m.sup.2/g or less as measured by the BET method, menthol is sorbed at a sorption rate of 80% or more but 92% or less with reference to the saturated amount of menthol for the activated charcoal.

Porous carbon and methods of production thereof

Embodiments of the invention relate to porous carbon and methods of preparing porous carbon. In some embodiments, the prepared porous carbon exhibits enhanced selectivity for hydrogen cyanide (HCN), In one embodiment, the method comprises impregnating activated carbon with a metal oxide, such as zinc oxide. The carbon is suitable for use in smoke filtration.

Filtering material and filter for retaining polyaromatic hydrocarbons, carbonyls and other compounds from smoke from tobacco products

A hybrid graphene material and a filter capable of retaining, in whole or in part, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, carbonyl and other smoke compounds from tobacco products or industrial processes, having as adsorbent substances activated carbon and graphene materials, both supported by the same matrix and in the same filter compartment, which may or may not be attached to another conventional filter compartment of cellulose acetate fibers or similar polymer, and a method for manufacturing such material.

Filters and smoking articles include sodium bicarbonate-treated fibers and activated carbon capable of selectively removing one or more selected constituents from mainstream smoke. Methods for making cigarette filters and cigarettes using the sodium bicarbonate-treated fibers and activated carbon, and methods for treating mainstream smoke comprising the sodium bicarbonate-treated fibers and activated carbon are also provided.

AEROSOL-COOLING ELEMENT AND ARRANGEMENTS FOR USE WITH APPARATUS FOR HEATING A SMOKABLE MATERIAL

Aerosol-cooling elements for use with an apparatus for heating smokable material are disclosed. In one example, the element is a monolithic rod having first and second ends and has plural through holes extending between the first and second ends. Other arrangements are described.

Filtered cigarette incorporating an adsorbent material

A filter element incorporating an adsorbent material is provided. The filter element may comprise a first section of filter material and a second section of filter material spaced apart to form a compartment therebetween. The compartment may be filled with one or more adsorbents or the compartment may be divided into two regions, wherein one compartment region is filled with an adsorbent and the other compartment region is either filled with an ion-exchange resin or remains empty. The section of filter material adjacent to the tobacco rod may include one or more channels therethrough for passaging smoke directly from the tobacco rod into the adsorbent-filled compartment. The mouth end section of filter material may contain a breakable capsule, wherein the breakable capsule is filled with a flavoring agent capable of altering the taste characteristics of mainstream smoke.
