The present disclosure relates to a filter for a smoking device, such as, but not limited to, a water pipe. The filter includes a body that is positionable over a mouthpiece of the smoking device, to filter impurities from smoke drawn therethrough, and a base that secures the body over the mouthpiece such that smoke is drawn therethrough, prior to inhalation by a user. The body can include one of more filtration layers, such as a first layer formed from a material selected to filter carcinogens and other impurities from the smoke prior to inhalation, and a second layer formed from a material selected to minimize or prevent the transmission of bacteria, viruses, or other contagions from a user's mouth to the smoking device. A filter assembly has an outer housing having an open first end and an open second end. An inner filter housing is within the outer housing adjacent the second end, and a gasket is provided at the first end of the outer housing. An internal chamber is provided between the first end of the outer housing and the inner filter housing, where during use, fluid from the within the internal chamber is drawn out the second end of the outer housing by way of the inner filter housing. A filter is provided within the inner filter housing. The gasket forms a gasketed opening smaller than the open first end of the outer housing. A method of forming a carbon material from the stalk or roots of a plant of the Nicotiana species is provided herein, wherein the method includes i) receiving a tobacco material comprising at least one of a stalk material and a root material of a harvested plant of the Nicotiana species; and ii) pyrolyzing the tobacco material to remove volatiles and to form a tobacco-derived carbon material. Optionally, the method can further include activating the tobacco-derived carbon material. The tobacco-derived carbon material can be incorporated into a tobacco product. A carbon material derived from pyrolyzing a tobacco material in the form of at least one of a tobacco stalk material and a tobacco root material of a harvested plant of the Nicotiana species is also provided herein.
