PROTECTIVE SPORTS HELMET
20200113266 · 2020-04-16 ·

A football helmet includes a one-piece outer shell defining an exterior and an interior. The one-piece outer shell includes a crown portion, defining an upper region of the shell. The shell further includes a front portion, extending generally forward and downward from crown portion, a left side portion, and a right side portion. The left side portion and the right side portion extend generally downward and laterally from the crown portion sufficiently to cover a respective left or right ear of a football player wearing the helmet. The outer shell further includes a rear portion, extending generally rearward and downward from the crown portion. The helmet includes a plurality of bumps defined on the exterior of the outer shell. Each of the bumps are a dome shaped protrusion that absorb, deflect, and distribute energy upon impact.

A complete helmet assembly comprising an inner helmet assembly similar to a baseball, softball, or cricket helmet and an exterior shell assembly are disclosed. The inner helmet assembly is similar to a standard helmet. The exterior shell assembly comprises two or more layers, one of said layers (preferably the more exterior layer) being hard and elastic and one or more of said layers (preferably a more internal layer) being a plastically deformable layer comprising a crumple zone that would need to be replaced after the exterior shell assembly receives significant damage. The user gets the advantages of both a reusable interior helmet and the advantages of single impact safety materials commonly used in bicycle and motorcycle helmets.

HELMET WITH FLEXIBLE STRUCTURE FOR IMPROVED FORCE ATTENUATION
20200068978 · 2020-03-05 ·

A helmet includes a shell, a brim, ridges, and multiple flexible structures. The shell is shaped to receive a user's head. The brim covers the user's forehead and areas above the temples and ears and protrudes from the outer surface of the shell. The ridges are located along the back and top of the helmet and also protrude from the outer surface of the shell. The flexible structures, which are made of a material that is more flexible than the shell, the brim, and the ridges, are positioned in separation gaps between the shell and the brim and ridges. The shell, brim, ridges, and flexible structures are fused together as a single unibody. When the helmet is subjected to an impact on the brim or the ridges, the corresponding flexible structure deforms so that the brim or ridge moves relative to the shell. The deformation of the flexible structure attenuates the force of the impact, which improves the helmet's ability to protect the user from impacts.

Protective helmet cap

The present disclosure provides an apparatus for use in reducing the impact to the head during sporting activities. The present disclosure provides a helmet cap that covers an underlying hard shell helmet. The helmet cap has a durable, energy absorbing outer shell, which lessens the initial impact to the helmet. The outer shell is formed into segments of padded material that may deform on impact. The outer shell has an inner surface that allows the outer shell to slide over the surface of a helmet thereby reducing forces applied to a wearer. The helmet cap may be securely attached to helmets without modification of the helmets. The helmet cap may include an adjustable fastener that allows the helmet cap to be securely attached to helmets of varying dimensions.

A football game system and method of play including an oblong ball and a rectangular playing field having opposing sidelines, an end line, and a goal line, the opposing sidelines extending a length of the playing field, the end line extending a width of the playing field between the opposing sidelines, and the goal line extending the width of the playing field between the opposing sidelines and being positioned inwardly from the end line. A first squad of nine players each wearing soft-shell helmets and soft-shell shoulder pads has as an objective to move the oblong ball across the first goal line. A second squad of nine players each wearing soft-shell helmets and soft-shell shoulder pads has as an objective to defend the first goal line by stopping the movement of the oblong ball by the first squad towards the first goal line.

The present invention provides a protective headgear having a multi-layered shell to attenuate amplitude of incident mechanical waves of a blunt trauma to a human head by inducing destructive interference with the incident mechanical waves through phase reversal of reflected mechanical waves reflecting off a boundary between two adjacent layers of the protective headgear, and by coaxially converging the phase-reversed reflected mechanical waves with the incident mechanical waves. The multi-layered shell is configured to equally protect people having a similar size of head but with a range of body weight.
