20220019120 · 2022-01-20 · ·

An optical modulator, that includes a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and three or more segments, generates an optical signal based on three or more electric signals transmitted in parallel. The three or more segments are provided in series along an optical path of the Mach-Zehnder interferometer and respectively shift a phase of light propagating through the optical path based on the three or more electric signals. A length of at least one of the three or more segments is different from lengths of the other segments. Optical path lengths from input ends of respective segments to input ends of corresponding next segments are the sae.

Beam steering device such as optical phased array (OPA) is a key component in applications of solid-state LIDAR and wireless communication. The traditional single-layer OPA results in a significant energy loss due to the substrate leakage caused by the downward coupling from the grating coupler structure. In the present disclosure, we have investigated a structure based on multi-layers Si.sub.3N.sub.4/SiO.sub.2 platform that can form a 3D OPA to emit the light from the edge of the device with a high efficiency, a 2D converged out-coupling beam will be end-fired to the air. The high efficiency and wide horizontal beam steering are demonstrated numerically, the influence of vertical crosstalk, the delay length, number of waveguide layers, and the fabrication feasibility are also discussed.

DIELECTRIC TRAVELLING WAVE TIME DOMAIN BEAMFORMER
20200326607 · 2020-10-15 ·

A scanning Dielectric Travelling Wave Array (DTWA) device suitable for use as a wideband, tunable, two-dimensional beamformer. The device is formed from a set of planar waveguides, elongated waveguide sections and/or progressive delay layers. By controlling the index of refraction () of the waveguides, waveguide sections, and/or progressive delay layers, the device to aim at a particular angle of incidence of energy arriving on the top face, in both azimuth and elevation. These indi(cies) of refraction may be controlled with a set of varactors. By observing a constraint on the size of the waveguides as related to the bandwidth of the signals of interest, the waveguide can to receive from or transmit to different directions at the same time. The varactors may be provided by continuous strips of material disposed along the top and bottom of each waveguide section, or as a set of discrete controllable sections distributed along the primary axis of each waveguide section. Pairs of adjacent waveguide sections may be fed to provide complementary propagation modes, such as TE1 and TM1 modes. The pair of waveguide sections may be driven in quadrature to provide greater control over the axial ratio.

An exemplary embodiment of the present invention relates to an electro-optic modulator for modulating optical radiation. The electro-optic modulator comprises at least one upstream modulation subunit, at least one downstream modulation subunit and at least one phase-matching unit. The upstream and downstream modulation subunits are optically connected in series such that the optical radiation passes the downstream modulation subunit after passing the upstream modulation subunit. An electrical upstream modulation signal may be applied to the upstream modulation subunit, and an electrical downstream modulation signal may be applied to the downstream modulation subunit. The phase-matching unit is configured to delay the downstream modulation signal such that a phase difference between the upstream modulation signal and the downstream modulation signal is minimal.
