A camera for detecting an object moved through a detection zone is provided that has an image sensor for recording image data, a reception optics having a focus adjustment unit for setting a focal position, a distance sensor for measuring a distance value from the object, and a control and evaluation unit connected to the distance sensor and the focus adjustment unit to set a focal position in dependence on the distance value, and to trigger a recording of image data at a focal position at which there is a focus deviation from a focal position that is ideal in accordance with the measured distance value, with the focus deviation remaining small enough for a required image definition of the image data.

In a taking mode, an image is displayed in a small size on an upper portion of the display screen. In reproducing, the camera body is rotated sideways by 90 degree. In a reproducing mode, display posture of the image is also rotated by 90 degree, and the image is displayed in a large size on the entire display screen.

A system control unit consecutively images a subject by driving based on a global shutter method, divides captured image data obtained by the imaging into a plurality of areas, and each time each area is generated, compares the generated area with the same area as the area in the captured image data generated by the imaging performed before the imaging, and detects a moving object from the area based on a result of the comparison. Based on a change in position of the detected moving object, the system control unit predicts a timing at which a trigger range TR set in the captured image overlaps with the moving object, and performs automatic imaging in a frame period that includes the timing.

Due to a fact that there is no arrangement of the telescopic rod on the photography assistant device, the volume of the photography assistant device is small, which is convenient to carry.
