The one or more load cells are operative to sense a weight of the user while the user is present on the seating surface. The processor is configured to detect a presence of the user on the seating surface, determine an initial weight of the user in response to detecting the presence; monitor, over time, the weight of the user while the user is present on the seating surface. Further, the processor can detect that the weight of the user has decreased from the initial weight by more than a predetermined amount or percentage, and generate an alert.
