A detection device and method includes a tongue component having a distal end portion that is insertable a predetermined distance into a card entry slot of a card reader and also having an electrical contact disposed on the distal end portion of the tongue component. A signal component coupled to the electrical contact is activated in response to receiving an electric current by the signal component via the electrical contact disposed on said distal end portion of the tongue component when the distal end portion of the tongue component is inserted the predetermined distance into the card entry slot. An overlay component having portions defining a surface topography corresponding to a surface topography of portions of a bezel area of the card entry slot supports a proximal end portion of the tongue component.

A contactless card reader comprises a contactless card reader front-end coupled to a processor. A communications module is coupled to the processor and a set of sensors is coupled to the processor. The set of sensors determines parameters related to the location, orientation and motion of the card reader. The processor receives the parameters from the set of sensors and utilizes the parameters and scenario configuration data to evaluate a rule. The result of the evaluation of the rule results in a limitation on the operation of the card reader. The communications module is configured to intermittently receive the scenario configuration data from external sources.

A card reader may include a main body frame, an IC contact block and a guide shaft for moving the IC contact block between a contact position and a retreated position. The guide shaft may be inserted through and pulled out from the IC contact block. The main body frame includes a first shaft holding part and a second shaft holding part which hold the ends of the guide shaft. The first shaft holding part is formed with an arrangement hole which is a first cam groove structured to move the IC contact block and the second shaft holding part is formed with a second cam groove structured to move the IC contact block. A coming-off prevention member which prevents coming-off of the guide shaft from the first shaft holding part and the second shaft holding part is detachably attached to the guide shaft or the main body frame.

A payment terminal such as a payment reader may receive and form electrical connections with an electronic transaction card such as an EMV chip card. The payment terminal may provide a clock signal at a rate that exceeds a specified rate for the EMV chip card. The payment terminal may transmit messages to the EMV chip card and monitor receive messages at a data connection. The payment terminal may determine that the clock rate is excessive based on a timeout of a receive message, an error rate of a receive message, or a receive message indicating that one of the transmit messages was not received by the EMV card. The payment terminal may reduce the clock rate to a rate that is below the specified rate for the EMV chip card.
