Apparatus and method of monitoring for in-flight aircraft engine ice crystal accretion
A method of monitoring for the in-flight accretion of matter involves an electric field sensor applying a time-varying electric field to an engine surface of an aircraft while the aircraft is in flight. The electric field sensor is thermally-coupled and thermally-matched to the engine surface. A sensor monitor receives, in substantially real-time from the electric field sensor, at least one measurement set that includes a measurement of a phase and a magnitude of a current detected by the electric field sensor and resulting from the time-varying electric field. The sensor monitor generates an assessment, in substantially real-time, of an instantaneous accumulation of matter on the engine surface from the at least one measurement set. The sensor monitor activates an alarm upon the assessment indicating an accumulation of matter on the engine surface.

METHOD AND DEVICE FOR GENERATING A SIGNAL WARNING OF SLIPPERINESS ON A ROADWAY
A method and a device for generating a signal which indicates the imminent formation of slipperiness on a roadway (2) before this arises on the roadway, wherein radiation reflected from the roadway, or from a point adjacent to the roadway, is evaluated, which radiation emanates from at least one reference surface (11) arranged in or on the roadway or the adjacent point, which reference surface is formed by a material different from the roadway covering material. The reference surface is selected from a material on which slipperiness is formed earlier than on the road surface material. The signal (13) is emitted when the evaluation shows that slipperiness has formed on the reference surface (11).

Automated super-cooled water-droplet size differentiation using aircraft accretion patterns
Apparatus and associated methods relate to determining, based on a spatial extent of ice accretion, whether an atmosphere contains super-cooled water droplets that equal and/or exceed a predetermined size. A convex-shaped housing is mounted to an aircraft and exposed to an airstream. The convex-shaped housing has a testing region that is monitored for ice accretion by an ice detector. A boundary locator determines a specific location to be tested within the testing region. The determined specific location corresponds to a calculated boundary that separates an ice-accretion region from an ice-free region if the atmosphere contains super-cooled water droplets up to the predetermined size. If the ice detector detects ice accretion at the determined specific location, an alert is generated. The alert can advantageously inform a pilot of an atmosphere containing super-cooled water droplets that equal or exceed the predetermined size.

Road condition monitoring system
A road condition monitoring system capable of measuring the radiance reflected by an area of interest or the thermal radiance emitted by an area of interest in wavelengths range containing a crossover point between the curves representing the absorption of electromagnetic radiation by ice and water. A detector configured to measure the radiance in a first band having wavelengths in a spectral band on a first side of the crossover point and output a first band signal, and measure the radiance in a second band having wavelengths in a spectral band on a second opposing side of the crossover point and output a second band signal. A data processing unit configured to determine the ratio of the first band signal to the second band signal and compare the ratio to predetermined critical ratios to output a determination signal indicating the presence of water or various types of ice.
