A wrapping material for a smoking article is disclosed, which has a laminar shape that extends further in two mutually orthogonal spatial directions X and Y than in a third spatial direction Z orthogonal to the spatial directions X and Y. The wrapping material has, at least in part of its area, a first and a second diffusion capacity D.sub.1 and D.sub.2 for a diffusion of CO.sub.2 through the wrapping material in the +Z-direction and the Z-direction, respectively, wherein for the first and second diffusion capacity D.sub.1 and D.sub.2, each an average of 10 values, one or both of the following relationships (i) and (ii) hold:
|D.sub.1D.sub.2|0.03 cm/s(i)
at a probability of error of 1% 2 .Math. D 1 - D 2 .Math. D 1 + D 2 0.030 . ( ii )

Smoking article

A smoking article, such as a cigarette, includes a carbonaceous heat source. A mouth end piece segment is located at the mouth end of the smoking article, and the mouth end piece segment allows the smoking article to be placed in the mouth of the smoker to be drawn upon. The smoking article further incorporates an aerosol-generating segment located between the heat generation segment and the mouth end piece segment. The aerosol-generating segment incorporates an aerosol-forming material (e.g., glycerin and flavors). The heat generation segment is in a heat exchange relationship with the aerosol-generating region such that heat generated by the burning fuel element acts to volatilize aerosol-forming material for aerosol formation. The carbonaceous heat source is in intimate contact with coarse, fine or ultrafine particles of materials such as cerium oxide, or mixtures of cerium oxide and palladium chloride.

An aerosol-generation system for a smoking article comprises an aerosol-generating segment and a heat generation segment. The heat generation segment has a length and includes a heat source. The aerosol-generation system for a smoking article also comprises an insulator having at least a portion extending beyond the second end of the heat source, such that the portion is axially arranged in a lengthwise direction proximate to the aerosol-generating segment. Each segment is physically separate and in a heat exchange relationship. The heat source comprises a carbonaceous material.
