Banded papers, smoking articles and methods
Wrapper for cigarette manufacture includes transversely extending band regions applied by a printing technique, such as gravure printing. The band regions comprise starch, an anti-wrinkling agent such as 1,2 propylene glycol or glycerin, and optionally calcium carbonate. Any suitable printing technique can be used to apply the aqueous solution to the banded regions. The pattern of banded regions may be bands, stripes, two-dimensional arrays, undulated regions, and the like along and/or around the tobacco rod. The pattern can be applied in one or more layers. The pattern may be configured so that when a smoking article is placed on a substrate, at least two longitudinal locations along the length of the tobacco rod have film-forming compound located only on sides of the smoking article not in contact with the substrate.

SMOKING ARTICLE WITH EXTINGUISHMENT MEANS
There is provided a smoking article (10) comprising: a tobacco rod (12) comprising a charge (16) of tobacco material circumscribed by a wrapper (18); a filter (14) arranged downstream of the tobacco rod (12); and a hollow tube (20) defining an inner cavity (22) and attaching the filter (14) to the tobacco rod (12). An affixing portion (24) of the tobacco rod (12) is received within the inner cavity (22) and secured to the hollow tube (20) by means of a thermally deactivatable adhesive (26) provided on an outer surface of the wrapper (18) or on an inner surface of the hollow tube (20) or on both. Thus, upon deactivation of the adhesive, at least a portion of the tobacco rod (12) becomes slidable within the hollow tube (20) in relation to the filter (14).

Nucleic acid sequences encoding transcription factors regulating alkaloid biosynthesis and their use in modifying plant metabolism
Plant metabolism and alkaloid levels can be regulated by transcription factors that regulate the nicotinic alkaloid biosynthetic pathway. In one embodiment, the disclosure provides a transcription factor that negatively regulates alkaloid biosynthesis, such as nicotine biosynthesis.

CIGARETTES AND THEIR CONSTRUCTION
A cigarette is provided with the tobacco column portion adjacent the filter assembly encased by a heat shrink material whereby as the burn approaches the butt the heat shrink material begins to contract radially and compress the encased tobacco column restricting the air flow therethrough. This reduces the diameter of burning column adjacent the filter assembly and thus extinguishes or at least confines the remaining tobacco in the cigarette.

Wrapping material for smoking articles with directionally dependent diffusion capacity
A wrapping material for a smoking article is disclosed, which has a laminar shape that extends further in two mutually orthogonal spatial directions X and Y than in a third spatial direction Z orthogonal to the spatial directions X and Y. The wrapping material has, at least in part of its area, a first and a second diffusion capacity D.sub.1 and D.sub.2 for a diffusion of CO.sub.2 through the wrapping material in the +Z-direction and the Z-direction, respectively, wherein for the first and second diffusion capacity D.sub.1 and D.sub.2, each an average of 10 values, one or both of the following relationships (i) and (ii) hold:
|D.sub.1D.sub.2|0.03 cm/s(i)
at a probability of error of 1%
