Wearable haptic and touch communication device
This disclosure describes techniques and apparatuses enabling a wearable haptic and touch communication device. The techniques enable users to interact with their mobile devices using haptics, both to receive information from their devices and to make selections for their devices. The techniques may also enable users to interact with mobile devices without the aid of visual display or audio output.
Braille cell and associated pin support and pin actuation assemblies
A braille cell and associated braille pin support and pin actuation assemblies are disclosed. The braille cell can include a frame, braille pins movable up and down between raised and lowered positions, and a pin actuation assembly to individually move the pins. The braille cell can include support arms, each of which having a base end connected to the frame and a pin end connected to and following a motion of a respective pin between its raised and lowered positions. The pin actuation assembly can include pin actuation units, each having a motor with a rotatable motor shaft and multiple cams mounted on the shaft, each for selectively actuating a respective pin. Each pin actuation unit can also include an angular position sensing system for monitoring, for example magnetically, a passage of the shaft through a reference angular position, and deriving information about a current angular position of the shaft.

Braille writing device
A handheld device to enable a person to create Braille impressions in adhesive tape as labels or messages, where the device includes a hollow base structure, with a tape exit port, and a top region with flexurally hinged embossing arms whose tips converge to a central region, where the tips have downwardly projecting convex bump structures located above concave bump receiving structures, and a tape holding structure onto which a roll of tape can be placed, whereby tape coming from the roll can pass between the convex and concave bump structures, over the cutting edge and out the tape exit port. Furthermore, the device can have a cover structure with flexurally hinged members located above, and coupled to, the hinged embossing arms with snap domes to provide an audible click and tactile cue when the flexurally hinged members are pushed down on by a user's fingers.

Refreshable Braille display
A refreshable Braille display that connects to computers and serves as a computer monitor for sight impaired people. Integrated within the display are mechanical pins that are activated by either stationary or mobile actuators, such as coils or solenoids. These pins either move rotationally or vertically when activated by the actuators. Spacing of these pins is tight enough to display graphics. Additionally, the pins are arranged such that various heights of the pins enable 3D graphics.

BRAILLE WRITING DEVICE
Braille writing devices and systems, and corresponding methods of writing braille characters on a tape medium are described herein. The devices and systems emboss tactile dots on different types of tape medium to enable braille character writing and advance the tape medium to create accurate and repeatable spacing of the braille characters. The devices and systems may be comprised of simply molded plastic parts that snap together using elastically averaging precision alignment features.
