In one aspect, a device includes a processor, a video display accessible to the processor, an electronic ink (e-ink) layer accessible to the processor and disposed on the device in a plane parallel to a plane established by the video display, at least one sensor accessible to the processor, and storage accessible to the processor. The storage bears instructions executable by the processor to execute an application and, based on input from the at least one sensor, determine whether to present content associated with the application using one or more of the e-ink layer and the video display

Embodiments may include computer executable programmed instructions stored on a non-transitory computer readable storage medium that direct a processor to modify at least one parameter of content that is displayed on a display screen of an electronic device, and/or to implement a simplified graphical user interface. One embodiment is implemented using an e-paper display screen.

An autonomous pixel comprises a display element, a plurality of different sensors and a control element. The sensors are arranged to detect one or more external stimuli and the control element is arranged to generate, entirely within the autonomous pixel, a control signal to drive the display element based, at least in part, on a magnitude of an external stimulus detected by one or more of the different sensors.

The sensor data may include image data of a current page in the book. The bookmark server determines bookmark data indicative of the current reading position based on the sensor data. The bookmark server transmits the bookmark data to the smart bookmark device and, in some embodiments, to the client computing devices and/or applications. Systems and methods are provided for optimizing battery life in an electronic device. The device is configured to make periodic assessments of battery capacity by measuring the DC resistance value of the battery cell during the execution of a power-consuming operation. If the measured DC resistance value reaches a threshold level, the device can initiate a power-saving mode in which an operating parameter of the device is adjusted to decrease power consumption.
