Embodiments of systems and methods for blending multi-channel signals are described. In one embodiment, a method for blending multi-channel signals involves computing component signals from the multi-channel signals, cross-fading the component signals based on different temporal rates to generate cross-faded component signals and generating a blended multi-channel signal based on the cross-faded component signals. Other embodiments are also described.

A virtual instrument can manage separate static and dynamic samples for various notes that can be played by the virtual instrument. In some cases, the static samples correspond to resonance sounds recorded for an instrument and are the same for every note. However, the dynamic samples may correspond to isolated sounds that are recorded for each variation of a note that can be played. In response to a user's selection of a note on a user interface of the virtual instrument, the virtual instrument may determine a rule for layering the various static and dynamic samples for playback.

One or more assigners selecting a note to be sounded according to operation state of plural controls corresponding respectively to notes are provided, it is decided for each of the assigners whether or not to select a note to be sounded in response to a key-off operation of any of the controls, and when a key-off operation of any of the controls is detected, the assigner which is decided to select a note to be sounded, is instructed to select a note to be sounded according to operation state of the controls after the detection of the key-off operation.

According to the present invention, in response to the change of the menu hierarchy, it is possible to diversify the BGM easily. First, BGM 1, BGM 2, and BGM 3 (hereinafter the BGM 1, 2, and 3) that are the same piece of music performed with different sounds are played back simultaneously. Only the volume of the BGM 1 is turned up and the volume of the BGM 2 and 3 are turned down to mute. Next, in response to the change of the menu hierarchy, the volume of the BGM 1 is muted and the volume of one of the muted BGM 2 or 3 is turned up.
