Noise filling concept
Noise filling of a spectrum of an audio signal is improved in quality with respect to the noise filled spectrum so that the reproduction of the noise filled audio signal is less annoying, by performing the noise filling in a manner dependent on a tonality of the audio signal.

Adaptive comfort noise parameter determination
A method for generating a comfort noise (CN) parameter is provided. The method includes receiving an audio input; detecting, with a Voice Activity Detector (VAD), a current inactive segment in the audio input; as a result of detecting, with the VAD, the current inactive segment in the audio input, calculating a CN parameter CN.sub.used; and providing the CN parameter CN.sub.used to a decoder. The CN parameter CN.sub.used is calculated based at least in part on the current inactive segment and a previous inactive segment.

SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR HANDLING SILENCE IN AUDIO STREAMS
Systems and methods for handling silence in audio streams are disclosed. In one aspect, a transmitter detects a halt in an audio stream. After detection of the halt in the audio stream, the transmitter embeds a silence signal into the audio stream and transmits the silence signal to associated receivers. The associated receivers may respond to the embedded silence signal by “playing” silence or by using the silence signal to activate a silence protocol. In either event, the associated receivers do not receive the original audio halt and do not produce an unwanted audio artifact.
Generation of comfort noise
A comfort noise controller for generating CN (Comfort Noise) control parameters is described. A buffer of a predetermined size is configured to store CN parameters for SID (Silence Insertion Descriptor) frames and active hangover frames. A subset selector is configured to determine a CN parameter subset relevant for SID frames based on the age of the stored CN parameters and on residual energies. A comfort noise control parameter extractor (50B) is configured to use the determined CN parameter subset to determine the CN control parameters for a first SID frame following an active signal frame.

METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR VOICE DATA TRANSMISSION
Methods and apparatus are provided for transmitting voice data in a wireless communication system, in particular there is provided an apparatus comprising an audio processing module configured to detect a period of silence in a voice signal and to output an indication of the detected period of silence, and a communication module coupled to the audio processing module and configured to transmit upload packets according to a predefined scheduling allocation, the upload packets comprising the voice signal, wherein the communication module is further configured to, upon receipt of an indication of a detected period of silence refrain from transmitting further upload packets using the predefined scheduling allocation for a predetermined period of time.
