SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR DYNAMICALLY CLEANING READ/WRITE HEAD
A sequential storage media system may include a head for reading or writing data to sequential storage media and a controller communicatively coupled to the head. The controller may be configured to control winding of a tape comprising sequential storage media and cleaning media between reels of a cartridge comprising the tape in order to clean a head of a sequential storage media system by passing the cleaning media over the head, after cleaning the head of the sequential storage media system, monitor a bit error rate of input/output communication between the head and the sequential storage media, and repeat the cleaning and the monitoring steps responsive to the bit error rate exceeding a threshold.
A sequential storage media system may include a head for reading or writing data to sequential storage media and a controller communicatively coupled to the head. The controller may be configured to control winding of a tape comprising cleaning media between reels of a cartridge comprising the tape in order to determine an occurrence of an event indicative of a need to clean a head of a sequential storage media system, issue to a user an indication of the occurrence of the event, determine an amount of cleaning for the head based on a bit error rate of input/output communication associated with the head, and responsive to receiving a cleaning cartridge in the sequential storage media system, clean the head of a sequential storage media system in accordance with the amount of cleaning by passing cleaning media of a cartridge over the head.

REDUCING CARBONACEOUS SMEAR AT THE NFT AREA ON HAMR HEAD
The present disclosure generally relates a method for removing a smear from a write head in a HAMR system. The smear can be removed by sufficiently heating the smear in an oxidative atmosphere to oxidize the smear. The material buildup that forms the smear has carbon, that when oxidized, is a gaseous product that leaves the write head with a reduced and/or eliminated smear. The heating occurs when the head is disposed in the parking location on the ramp remote from the magnetic media. Heating is possible using the same heat source for the HAMR head that is used to write data to the magnetic media.

Heat-assisted magnetic recording head with a near-field transducer extending beyond the media-facing surface
A recording head has a waveguide that delivers optical energy from an energy source and a write pole extending to a media-facing surface of the recording head. The recording head also has a near-field transducer coupled to receive the optical energy from the waveguide and emit surface plasmons from the media-facing surface towards a recording medium while the write pole applies a magnetic field to the recording medium. The near-field transducer has an extended portion that, as-manufactured, protrudes beyond the media-facing surface by a first distance.
